Jack, that's a TON for the info and help. Once I have a chance to pull the car into the shop and check I'll let you know what I need.

I'm hoping that I can bump my mileage up a bit from 25mpg. Between the 5th gear and just a tune up I'm hoping to be closer to 30mpg.

Does anybody know of anyone that makes a 5th gear taller than the evo III 5th gear that will also just bolt up for a 2g FWD?

I can tell you that with all my mods im getting 28 mpg on the highway with no tune at all last night with this. doing 80 mph (no knock) at like 3700 rpms.

The FWD cars have a 5th that is even shorter than the AWD units due to the final drive gearing. If you pop an EVOIII 5th in a FWD you get a much taller gear in those than you do an AWD. It's 10% taller in an AWD but much more than that in a FWD. I forget how much taller though...

I just got my transmission rebuilt, and I feel like my 5th gear is now shorter.

I'm hitting about 3,750 RPM at 70 MPH. This seems lower geared than the stock 2g GST 5th gear. Can anyone else confirm? AT 90 MPH is was over 4,500 RPM. That's not right for cruising at 90 MPH. I feel like im gonna blow my motor just cruising...=(

My car has a stock GST Transmission, and in 5th gear it hits 1500 RPMs going about 36, so at 70 MPH, it should be reving at about 2900, not 3750. Something about your set-up seems wrong...

Sounds like 4th, to me. You sure you were in 5th?
Double check your results and then go kill the guy who did that to your car. OK ok, just ask politely for him to fix it.

EDIT: I probably don't know what I'm talking about since I don't own a FWD, nor do I have experience with the FWD 5th gear.

this is geared toward jack, but if anyone has first hand experience feel free to answer. I have a mirage turbo 89 and have the mirage turbo tranny in it. I have recently switched to a 2.0 liter turbo motor, out from the 1.6liter that came stock, and my gas mileage has sucked on the interstate. Can I swap an awd 5th in my car, will it fit (drop in) or is that not possible. my 5th gear is .74 and the awd is .666 if i remember right. so that would really help me out.

PS power to pull the gear is not a problem I have way more torque than I can use now, so if it is possible I'm going to do it. thanks a lot.

It's difficult to know without looking at the trans, but I would say no it will not just drop in. Some of the early 5th gears used a small 5th hub and slider and end cover. You have to swap a lot of parts to get it to fit.

36 MPG on the highway? Holy shit LOL. The 199 extra bucks will be worth it then.

I don't know about longer gears and all that, (even though I'd like a taller 1st in the GSX) but my GS-T got an avg of 43 mpg on my last trip home this past summer.

I got from South Carolina to Maine on 2 tanks of gas, doing 60mph the whole way. Gased up in SC, and again in Maryland and that was it.

Mpg is in driving habits too you know.

Jack, you do a taller 1st correct?

EDIT---- Sorry, answered my own question. I'll be giving you a call soon brother! :thumb:
