:hmm: But it's not like a lot of our cars have the power to get to 186. To be honest, 204 sounds realistic, it's just having the power to reach 204 is unrealistic. Understand where I'm coming from? It could go either way...

It's really not that unrealistic. A 2g has a .29 drag coefficiant (AKA: slippery as a fish). With a decent amount of usable power it can be reached in a long stretch of pavement. And yes, 200+MPH is at 8,000RPM.

Do you know the drag of a 1g? And I see what you mean, it's just that a lot of our cars would have 64 broken things when we are done cruising at 200 MPH @ 8000 RPM ROFL

Being told by Shep Trans that the 5th gear deal isn't a bolt in for a 91, and either way they don't sell them.

Well TeamRIP is who has the goodies!

either or both are going to be good transmissions.

Yeah 2300 for a trans... no thanks!

That's more than I paid for the whole car... and hell... almost more than I put into the AUTO trans on my diesel truck and I built that to hold 600hp.

??? who spent that ?

i have a lil over $ 3300 in my tranny. and it will hold "OVER" 700whp :)

.oh and dsm's are way diffrent than a diesel truck tranny. and are you sure you didnt buid it to 600 lbs of torque ?

because 600hp in a diesel is like a mid-high 7 sec ride, because with that much hp you would have "over" 1500 lbs of torque in a diesel. and if a dsm had 600hp it would have about 450 lbs of torque.

No, I wrote it correctly.
Truck puts down 525hp and 1200ft/lbs. 7 secs... uh... no. My friend has a 700hp Duramax and it is in the mid 10s. Gotta remember these trucks weigh 7000lbs plus.

I don't even see where you can spend that much on a little ricer trans really! There can't be that much in there!

on a ricer trans .dude get real these cars aint ricers. and diesels suck "dsm's" are better (dont forget what site your on).LOL...but there is alot of stuff in there .every thing inside my trans is not stock. so it costs the $$$

thats all :)

Sure they are. Made in Japan = ricer.

Diesels suck... hmmm. Latch onto a 20,000lbs trailer with your car and tell me that again. ROFL

Anyhow, why can't I do an easy swap on a 91 trans... I didn't know there was anything different compared to a 92.

To those of you with the evo 3 5th gear how can you guy stand the whine that the gear makes? It was annoying as heck to me.

no desined in japan built in the usa . DSM diamand star chrysler (dodge). not all cars are a ricer .

and you would have to catch me LOL .j/k ok enough arguing.

and you can just swap a diffrent 5th gear in. between the 91 and 92 they have a little bit diffrent ratio and spline . but you can just put the 10% taller 5th in

This forum used to be cool until someone started hating on dsm's. Cool. Turbo Deisels are the bomb.
Now seriously this is about 10% taller gear, not about whether a car is ricer or not.

The 10% taller EVOIII 5th gear is a helical gear, so it will not make noise unless it's installed wrong. I have seen people install them upside down before so that may have been the reason for the noises.

Wouldnt it take you longer to get to like 170 MPH using the taller gear then it would using the stock gear?

What im getting at is if your car is just for fun and you never plan on going over 180 mph why switch. If you drive it everyday and would like the extra MPG then I could understand it. I had my Tranny built at TRE and decided against the taller 5th because this car is just for fun and I could care less about MPG.

Well maybe this wasnt an evo 3 gear then, but it was straight cut and definitely a taller gear since it would cruse a little below 2000rpm around 60mph.

I was planning to go with the taller 5th when i have mine rebuilt and i took my gst to 160 with no problem before. i didnt even notice till i glanced at the speedo LOL but i would dig hitting 200mhp just for the heck of it. and the better mpg always sounds good too

Hm just had my transmission done by shep about two months ago. I got the stage 2, i asked him about the taller fifth. He tried to get me to stray from it saying the cost of the gear is not really worth a few hundred rpms. I like you guys were interested in it but he really didnt didnt seem like he wanted me to get it so i didnt. Wonder why?

He probably has stock in oil ;)

Did you break the speedlimiter?

Trying to figure out if the 5th gear deal is doable on a 91. Sure would be nice.

I'm not worried about how fast, but mpg since the car is just my "beater" daily driver.

nate my car is a 91 and I have a taller 5th gear so why isnt it doable.

I was told it's not a bolt in deal like talked about in this thread, but the whole trans has to come apart.

All you do is pull the cover and replace the first two gears you see, so it's not really tearing apart the tranny. Basically: Drain oil, pull cover, remove 2 nuts and slide the 2 gears off, slide 2 gears on, replace 2 nuts, replace cover, put oil in. Could be done in an hour even if you don't know what you're doing.

Does the trany need to be droped out of a FWD 2g for this to be done, or can this be done with the tranny still on the car?

EVOIII 5th gear installation can be done with the trans in the car if FWD or AWD. The problem is the 90-early 91 units. They had a smaller synchro for 5th which will not allow the EVOIII gear to just pop right in. You have to replace the hub and slider, synchro ring, end cover, and fork to the larger size if you have this earlier trans. All of this can still be done in the car, it's just more of a pain and costs more money.

The only issue I have with the EVOIII 5th gears is they are very difficult to keep in stock. It takes months to get them in from Japan, so I have to try to guess how many we will go through and try to keep the right amount on the shelf. I ran out not too long ago and am still waiting for another bunch to show up. Several units and orders are on hold because of this so it kind of sucks. That may be the reason why some won't deal with these gears, not sure though. I really like them, but sometimes these orders can be a pain.
