What can cause this? How much on estimated would it cost to have checked out and fixed? could buying a rebuild kit fix this?

You put no research before you posted this. I'll give you a few guidelines to go by before you start to search:

1. Piston rings
2. Valve seals
3. Headgasket

Do a compression and leakdown test and then when you have your results post them. PM me if you have any more questions. All your answers can be found using the search function. Do one of those two tests, then post results.

When mine was smoking and using oil, It ended up being head related. My rings have 250k on them and are fine... The 'Ghetto' head job I did on mine cost less than $200 and cured my issues. Valve seals were my biggest problem. The 'Top End Gasket Set' was my biggest expense (the machine work was not that expensive at all).

We could use a little more info on you car as well... :dsm:

most likely it is the valve seals. estimates are usually around 300-600 atleast where i live, but while you're there might as well change the timing belt and anything else that may need replacing.
