2G 2G GST: Shifter stuck, cable issue or bracket?

Shifter is stuck in what looks like 5th gear, engine off or on. I suspect it has something to do with the right side linkage (if you're facing the car).

I've found that if I remove the cable from the bracket completely, it'll allow me to shift into 1st and 3rd only. When I remove it from both the bracket and shift lever the shifter moves freely around loosely.

When the cable is tightened to the bracket but NOT the lever, I noticed that the cable end is almost at a slight angle when trying to pop it on, like you have to lightly "force" it at first but then it fits in just fine.

I've tried adjusting the bracket multiple times, making sure everything is tight & using new pins, and no disconnection or issues at the shifter itself. I've even tried loosening the bracket bolts with everything else connected to see if it would shift with the bracket in different orientations.

Anyone know what's up? What's my next move here? Thanks

If I were you, I would pop the cable off of the shifter linkage and then from that end see if you can freely move the cable. Also while it's off try to move the shift selector on the trans by hand. That will better tell you if it is the cable or if it is the trans itself. Also, sometimes you feel something that gives you a clue as to what it is.
If you find that it is the cable, it could be the bearings need replaced or it could be that the cable is getting stuck in the sleeve.

If it's the transmission...well...that might not be as easy.

When the cables are disconnected from the lever on the transmission, I can shift it by hand.

When I have the left side cable hooked up but not the right, I can shift into 1st, 3rd, and 5th from inside the car. It only gets stuck in "5th" and won't shift when the right cable is hooked up. So I know it's something to do with the cable, but don't know what.. not sure how to adjust it or determine where/how it's broken

I gotcha!

First, make sure that the cables are ran how they are supposed to be. I have heard stories of people accidentally crossing them or something.
Next easiest thing is to check the bearing/bushing on the trans linkage side to ensure that's moving alright.
Third, I would drip some wd40 or pb blaster on the steel cable and try to work it back and forth to see if it loosens up at all.
Fourth, make sure that the cable or linkage isn't getting bound up on anything in the engine bay.

If none of this is the case, I'd be curious if the issue is the shifter itself getting bound up on something under the center console.

The shifter cables typically break at the transmission

They don’t “break” the internal retainer cable breaks. The cables will be next to each other on the trans and should look identical, the silver cable coming through them should look tight. When I had a cable “break” the line went limp and basically can’t pull anything
