i have a 91 eclipse gs and i was going to settle on just going for show but my friend who is into engine work and stuff is insisting i can get a turbo in it for about a grand whats everyones opinions? worth it or no? car has 75 k on it

Although we're not supposed to say this, if you want a turbo you'll be miles and dollars ahead to buy one the factory did.

Many, many people have turbocharged N/A cars. I don't think many did it for a thousand.

I am in the process of buying all the parts for the turbo conversion, and so far it has cost me about $1,100 this is for stock parts between the 1G and 2G cars. I still have maybe $500-$600 more to go But most of theis cost will be the exhaust as I am getting 2.5" from the turbo back.

I have bee buying parts for 3 months and this is what I have....

SMIC and all piping (LICP and UICP)
1G BOV
1G TB elbow
Turbo intake
New Rebuilt 14b Turbo
J-Tube
Turbo Exhaust manifold
02 Housing
2G 8.5:1 Pistons and 1G rods
Turbo oil pan
Oil feed line
Water feed line
Water return Line
Turbo Lower themostat housing
Turbo water pipe
turbo Fuel rail
450CC injectors
BCS
Resistor pack + Injector plugs
Turbo FPR
Turbo 1G MAS
Turbo intake pipe (MAS to Turbo)
91 Turbo Cams

I think that is all, I might be missing a few things, and I still have more to buy. The only reson why I am building a turbo kit for my car is because I got the car for SOOO cheap that once I get the turbo on the car I will have paid as much as the turbo cars ( in good condition) are currently going for in houston. I currently have no car paynment and do NOT want one.

Hope this helps in getting an idea of how much you will have to buy. Good Luck! :thumb:

Yea pritty much me and Feeky4 are on the same track. I'm only turbo'ing my car b/c i dont want to pay the insurance of a turbo'd car. also i want to get my hands dirty and do the rebuild on the motor

My parts list purchased(very similiar to freeky4)-
SMIC and all piping (LICP and UICP)
1G BOV
1G TB elbow(flange cut to fint on n/t TB)
Rebuilt 14b Turbo
Turbo Exhaust manifold
02 Housing
2G 8.5:1 Pistons
Turbo oil pan
Oil feed line
Water feed line
turbo Fuel rail
450CC injectors
MBC
Resistor pack
Turbo FPR + Solenoid
Turbo 1G MAS
Turbo intake pipe (MAS to Turbo)
94 Turbo intake and exhaust Cams
Engine Rebuild Kit
Down Pipe

I spent over $1000(close to $1100 without the rebuilt kit)

Look at the lists below and the costs. you dont even need to have all of those unnecessary things such as the turbo bottom end. hell im putting together a turbo kit for my 2g for about $1000, and i dont have the luxary of using stock turbo parts, so you should be able to do it for under $1000

Considering my car has 130k doing the bottom end would be a smart thing to do. i'm only doing it for safety and so i don't run into other problems down the line. I want to do the conversion the correct way and make sure the engine is suited properly for the application. i know u can run the turbo on 9:1 compression but running it on 8.5:1 is better and more tunable by what most people i hear say. And yes the whole insurance thing is another issue, but in reality modding anything on ur car and not telling the insurance company is defrauding. u dont even have to be doing something as serious as a turbo to be considered fraud. i guess all those 420a people should be spoken to also ;)

Chris-

I hear ya. i have all the parts that i could slap on the car and go. And yes it was under a 1000 to get them all. the rebuild kit and the 2g pistons raised the whole turbo project price significantly. i'm just very afraid of destroying the car. i mean my car runs very well for the year it is and has no problems at all at the moment. im gonna take the little extra time and money and redo it all at once when i can and with the engine out of the car.

Worth is in the eye of the beholder. I'll tell you right now that 1g's are not made for show. So I'm glad you've changed your mind on that.

So here is the deal in my eyes. you could

A: take the grand you were going to spend on the turbo kit, add it to whatever you could sell your 1gN/T for, and come up with enough for a Turbo'd AWD 1g.

B: if you like your car enough, keep it spend the quality time learning about how the engine in your baby works. Become more knowledgeable about your car because of having to rebuild everything.

I think really its up to preference. For me I thought about selling my 2g, for the exact same color and trim and everything (99 GSX White/tan trim), but the price I would have had to pay for the car is more than double for what I payed for mine, and it doesn't include any of the nice things I already added to my car. (suspension/brakes/looks).

Also I liked the idea of taking something with a lot less horsepower and building it into something great.

Yes very well said. I want to be able to stand by my car and say "I" did the work on this car. i took the time to open it up and put it piece by piece back together and learn how to do things on it. its not the point of having a fast car or the blow off sound. i want to be able to just stand next to my car and say that i did all the work on it. i didnt get it that way.

I love the looks of my car and the year. most cars that i can even find that are stock turbo's are mostly 90's and 91's. in my area that i live. there all the ones with the pop ups and the different tail light assembly. i like the 2nd half of the 1g like what i have. i've had a different car for each of the past three years. i allready switched from a 92 eclipse gs to a 93 eclipse gs. i'm not switching again. if i'm gonna get another car its gonna be something different. Im doing it all for knowledge of the car so that i know how to do the repairs and everything else myself and also so i can give that extra learning experience to the next guy who asks for the help.
