like the tile says ... will a 90 tranny work with a 92 4 bolt rear if i change the driveshaft yolk? or are they different ratios?

You do not have to change the driveshaft yolk. If you are putting a 4 bolt rear in a 90 car, you have to replace the rear end, axels and cups. If you are putting a 90 trans in a 92.5+ car, you have to change the shifter, the bracket for the shifter cables on the trans and transfer case.

I just did the same swap on my 90 tsi and it takes a couple hours but it is really not that bad of a job. All you need to get is the rearend and the half shafts like stated above. Also air tools will help a bit and a prybar.

I have done the swap a few times. I find it easier to simply drop the entire rear end/subframe assembly as a whole and swap. This may seem harder to some people, but I feel it's easier IMO. There is only 2 bolts, and 6 nuts that hold the subframe to the body, along with disconnecting the ebrake line and brake caliper, and the four 14mm nuts in the hatch for the struts. Using a jack, the entire assembly can be lowered down, and jacked back up in the accepting car with the help of a friend.

Takes me roughly 2 1/2 hours to do the swap.

You may need the transfer case to match up to the 90 trans. That is the only problem you may run into...............
