Hey guys,
Wanting everyone's opinion. My current setup is: evo 3, big fmic, 2.5 ic piping, megan 2.5''-3'' downpipe, 3'' exhaust all the way back, greddy bov, tubular manifold. I have a supra pump on the way, which I will re-wire, will be putting in an fpr, then bigger injectors down the road just a little bit.

Anyway here is my question. I am getting things inline for managment. So I can get it tuned and ready for summer. I already have the old apexi afc (with the little knobs) I kinda like the looks of the new apexi neo. My question is would I be better off going with a wideband or a logger/scanner? (like a scanmaster) Along with my afc or safc neo. Or would I be better off just breaking down and going dsmlink? Let me know all of your oppinions!:thumb:

Thanks
Justin G.

It all depends on your goal for the car. Think long term! No one stays happy with their setup and upgrades are inevitable. If I were in your shoes, I would go with dsmlink, and get some big injectors @ 850-1000 cc. They would give you plenty of headroom for turning up the boost.

With the safc route, you are limited to @660 cc inj. and it jacks your timing up.

The by the time you buy a neo and logger setup, you are pretty close to the cost of dsmlink. If you keep a lookout, you can find dsmlink used alot cheaper.

Still should have a WB even with the 'link. I don't like any piggyback controller that won't control timing. Thats a big part of tuning that you have zero control over. Go 'link, tune to get rid of knock using the 'link logger, then when you get a WB, figure out why you're getting the knock. That's what I'd do anyways.

You could also go a more cost effective route of an Ostrich and TunerPro RT, although it does end up requiring more research and work to tune. The important thing is that you need to work on something from the inside of your ECU, not just manipulating the sensor inputs to fool it. You will need an EPROM ecu for this to work properly. If you don't have one already, consider adding $250 to you costs.

In your position a wideband is indispensable - an absolute must. You will have no idea what your engine is actually doing (burning and not burning) until you purchase a WB O2 sensor. Whether you go with a display or not is up to you, as some are only for tuning and work well with logger systems but have no gauge. These are often cheaper and work well for stock look but require a logger to know what it is doing.

Get the wideband o2, then save for a fuel management system that has a logging capability (i.e. DSMLink or better )

The majority of people here will automatically recommend DSMLink, and for good reason. It will most likely be everything 95% of DSM'ers will ever need. Since you already have a 95, you most likely have an Eprom ECU, so no need to spend the time and money looking for one. Check the DSMLink site for instructions how to verify whether your ECU is Eprom or not.

After that, WB O2, wired up so Link can log it, and you should be fairly good to go.

So here what my battle plan is. Let me know what you think. I am gonna get a wideband soon here, then I plan on using the old afc for a short period of time. Just so I can get a tune on it and get me by until I get the link. Good Idea?

Thanks for all the help and informative posts!:thumb:

That sounds like a good idea. I would also get a logger though. I know you where deciding between the two but if you could read you knock also you can get all the power possible. You can make the cable for free or even buy one for $20 or so. Then a palm on ebay is $10-$40 and software is free.

I'm also going to go a cheap way till I can get link. I'm going to run 950cc injectors, maf translator and a SAFC till I can afford link. It still may affect the timing but I'm going to run e85 so hopefully the motor can handle the timing. My mechanic said he has ran this setup with great success if dsmlink is not affordable.

Great plan!:thumb: A wideband is IMO one of the best things you can have wether just getting started or being an experienced tuner ( an experienced guy should have one already :p ). Just so you know everything is fueling right when making upgrades or just doing a pull on a car that you are not 100% familiar with. Logging is vital to a good tune too and makes things much easier when you can look back at a run and not try and get it all mentally wide open on the streets unless you've got loads of cash for dyno time to get it tunes from teh start (that is unless you got 2 people and the driver knows exactly what the tuner is wanting then you can get by without having to log... it works:p)

Let us know how she runs when you get the wideband and Dsmlink in!
