The unfortunate thing with a number of the replacement parts vendors are selling these days is that the parts are not OEM, they are Topline. It just so happens that I was reading earlier today about a gentleman who used a Topline rebuild kit for his engine (not sure if it was a 1G or 2G) but ended up with a potentially blown engine because a Topline freeze plug flat out fell out. The freeze plug is not that hard to install; I quote from a very reputable DSM engine builder from the Minneapolis area:

light RTV and pound them in with an appropriate driver. I use a seal driver that is the correct diameter.

More then likely mechanic error while installing them. I have never had a problem with freeze plugs falling out of my engine

I hope it works out well for you. Either way, I will never use anything Topline in any DSM I ever own if at all possible, only OEM.

37k miles at 15psi on a big16g and nothing broke yet

Using all oem stuff to rebuild my 93 tsi awd though, not because I don't trust topline, just because I feel like going that route on this particular engine.
