For a while now i've been comtemplating taking the power steering out of my 98 GSX. I was just wondering who has done it and if it's a good idea or not. Thanks in advance for your input:thumb:

Does a factory manual rack steer easier than a power rack with no power ?

Well tonight i took the belt off because it just keeps leaking. I drove around and it isn't all that bad. I took the hoses off and checked them for cracks or tears and couldn't find anything. I didn't look into it all that deep tho. The problem is when it gets real cold the pump whines like a 2 dollar hoe and and i end up with a huge puddle of ps fluid on the ledge underneath the reservoir. And from what i can tell it looks like it's spewing out the top of the reservoir and running down the side. That's the only place it leaks and it's only done it when it's cold outside. If anyone has any ideas on what could be causing this let me know. It would be much appreciated. Thanks!!

if you keep driving that with no fluid circulating it will burn up your rack, its power assist for a reason. For a week or so you will be alright but go price a rack and then the labor to do it and that pump isnt so bad-just go to a junk yard and look for a reman one.

And the manual rack is slower, its like 4 turns lock to lock when the power one is fast with 2 or 2.5 turns lock to lock-big diference.

The only way i would go manual is if the car was a drag race only(i.e.mustang)
If this is your dd then your making a big mistake.:notgood:

Don't exaggerate, it isn't to bad. Once it gets rolling 5 mph it is pretty easy but parallel parking maybe a problem.

oh im not exagerating it sucks! i'm not a little guy either. plus your drivng a 1g too maybe 2g's are worse i dont know. i do know though i have first hand expeirence with it and he will not like it.

Are you sure your in the right thread??? WTF The topic is powersteering not "antifreeze should freeze anyway". Seriously, think about going back to high school for some english classes.

haha!! he must have posted in the wrong thread

alright i have some good input. im like the rest of you guys that "had" a leaking power steering line and i had a spair 1g 1.8 manual rack hanging around. this week i spent the time removing all the stuff and installing my manual rack. this was a bit of a hassle to install with the motor in the car but i eventually got it in. the manual rack does suck (not a small guy) but i LOVE the fact i dont have to worry about leaks, and how easy has become to work on my talon. i feel like im driving a balls to the wall race car (which to me is cool).

anyother questions just ask...

what's this manual rack that everyone is talking about?

I have a manual steering rack in my 93GSX. Its really not hard to turn at all, I think its easier than a non-working PS car. Like everyone said, you dont have to worry about leaking PS fluid and it cleans up the engine bay alot. Its also going to be my DD(when i get it to run for more than 15 minutes)
