Hi guys, so I have a smoke problem that I am having trouble pinpoint. I have a Holset H1e turbo, 1000cc injectorsm and the rest is in my profile. Now, when we went out to tune for the first time in a long time, under boost, we were getting a lot of white smoke. We ended up doint some diagnostics. The compression came out fine and the turbo did not have any shaft play. The last two culprits that we came up with is either my valve stem seals or the seals on my turbo are shot. Any other suggestions do you guys suggest? Another possibilityt is that I am getting too much oil pressure to the turbo and I am getting some blowby. Any input is welcome. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hmm, I believe my car has valve stem issues but It smokes when the engine gets hot and keeps smoking slowly. Its most noticeable when you are idling at a stop light and when you accelerate, lots of smoke comes out the tail in a puff. I think if its a problem occurring under boost it would lead to the turbo.

Yea I thought the same. I forgot to mention that my car has had the balance shafts removed and I feed the turbo from the head. I think my oil pressure under boost may be too high and therefore blowing through the turbo seals.

Will do! I haven't checked that out yet.

So we took the turbo off. There is no in and out play but a little side to side. The intake and compressor sides of the turbo have a good amount of oil in them. I am thinking that I was seeing to much pressure from the head and it either caused my turbo seals to blow...or I was experiencing major blow by because of the pressure. The car has not seen many WOT pulls because this is the first timeit is getting tuned. The Turbo itself was bought brand new also. So should I look into a rebuild or just add a restrictor to the oil line and see if a rebuild can be avoided (my car sees around 100-110psi of oil pressure at WOT, Holsets only like around 72 psi).

So I replaced the turbo with a rebuilt H1E. Also added a restrictor to the oil feed. And it still smokes. I expect it to smoke after the install because of all th eoil in the exhaust. However, wouldn't it smoke all the time if the excess oil was getting burned off. Because the smoking problem persists. It smokes on decel after a WOT run. If it is simply burning off the old oil, wouldn't it smoke all the time while I drove it?

Yea I know that. But its been said that when there is oil in your exhaust it usually comes out a whiteish gray, especially fi you run synthetic oil.

Its still gonna be blue if its trapped oil in the exhaust.
Sounds to me like you could be pushing coolant under boost. Unless you are 100 percent sure its oil and it smells like oil.

I am 99% sure it is oil. Is it normal though for the oil in the exhaust to be burning off only after a WOT pull? Shouldn;t it be constantly smoking if this was the case? I don't want to hear that this newly rebuilt turbo is also blown. Or that I just bought a new turbo for nothing LOL! I'm starting to think something is up with my oil return line and that may be causing smoking? Or even my cheap Autozone pcv vlave is causing excessive pressure?

PCV valve could be the culprit. They notoriously bad. That can cause all kinds of problems. There are check valves that guys on here use, I'm not sure where they get them from though. But you will smoke really bad especially under WOT if your PCV is bad.

Smoke a deceleration after WOT sounds like rings. Could be getting blow by from excess pressure.

I just started getting oil smoke right as I press the throttle. I'm thinking a seal in my turbo. But I don't understand. It's a newly rebuilt turbo. And it started smoking over night. Not hard driving or anything.

So I am ruling the turbo out as the smoking problem. I went on a couple WOT runs and after smoking on decel there was no oil at all at either side of the turbo outlets. I am starting to get scared. I am trying to figure this smoking problem and I'm stumped. I am going to redo a compression test to make sure it is not my piston rings. Maybe my valve stem seals? The one known problem I have right now is that my pcv valve will not thread in because the threads on the valve cover are stripped. So I put some teflon on there and got it as tight as I could. Its working correctly, but just not threaded in all the way. I am lost on this.

PS: the car smokes after any kind of acceleration. I can only go to 1psi and let off the gas and it still smokes.

So is there a way I can test the valve steam seals? The car does not smoke at idle so I don't know if it can be the valve stems.

I think I might have found the culprit. I measured my return line and the fitting is actually a -8an not a -10an like i thought. I think the oil drain is too small and its causing the smoke since the oil can not flow fast enough through it. I am going to build a bigger line and try it out. Wish me luck LOL.
