white smoke out of my exhaust in my 90 AWD tsi

i was driving my 1990 AWD tsi in the morning and it was about a 15-20 mile drive and when i stopped a little bit of white smoke was coming out of my exhaust. i knew it was not good and when i re-started my car about 5 min or so later a big plume of white smoke came out. and it would do this till i got home. it would only smoke when i let the gas off and when i would be at an idle. any suggestions on what it would be can help before i take it to the shop that put the JDM motor in it 2,500 miles ago. thanks guys

It could be a blown hg, but dont feel bad mine is blown to .

oh yeah i thought of that. but if its the head gasket wouldn't i lose power? because i started my car this weekend and it pulls hard still and the turbo spools up just fine, but the turbo does have a little shaft play but it still pulls and spools. the only problem is the fog machine built into the exhaust.... i'm not driving it at all till it gets the problem fixed.

the turbo has a tiny bit of shaft play.
there is no oil inside the turbo.
the coolant is a brown color.
i still have power and it pulls through every gear fine,
just lots and lots of smoke...

Have you checked your oil? if its blueish white smoke your burning oil maybe valve seals or piston rings... My car is doing that right now where it smokes after a while at idle...

i will go check that. its mostly pure white smoke. i havent seen any blue in it. but thanks!! i'm going to take it back to the shop that built and imported my motor. its under a 6 month warranty so they will look at it and see whats up

i will get those checked. thanks!! the shop that built the car and imported the motor is a 3 hour drive so i'll get it over as soon as i can get ahold of a trailer and truck and they will be able to tell me whats wrong with it

I had a similar problem, turned out my turbo went and she was burning oil. Not sure the extent of yours, but it got progressivly worse.

Same here.I was using massive amounts of oil though.

The coolant shoudn't be brown should it? Can you tell the differece between burning oil and burning coolant by the smell? If you use conventional oil it should have a very distinct oil smell. Also it won't be dark blue like blue jeans or anything, but it would be a bluish white. Either way you should probably have it taken care of regardless of anything said here.

As it gets colder more water condenses in the exhaust pipe on my car so it blows white smoke for 10-15 minutes or until I do a couple good pulls . I have also heard but can't verify that sometimes if the oil is leaking into the exhaust side of the turbo it can't produce white smoke.

I'm now just waiting on taking it back to the shop 3 hours away, the only thing is i dont have a huge truck of any kind or anthing strong enough to put it on a trailer and take it back. so now its a waiting game for a truck or trailer, thanks everyone!!

I might lean towards hg since the coolant is brownish.

the last time i blew my head gasket my car over heated and a bad sign of a bad hg is bubbling in your overflow tank for your radiator alson check your plug for signs of water deposits maybe u will get lucky and its just the turbo hope i helped also i would invest in a shop manual for ## car there verry helpfull

And the last time I blew a headgasket the oil turned a milkshake brown. It is pretty simple and cheap to replace a head gasket. It is also rather easy to tell if you have blown a head gasket.

I just bought a brand new EVO3 big 16g turbo and i'm putting it in this weekend when i'm off work, the coolant doesn't bubble when i go drive it around and the shaft play is enough to tell that the turbo is definitely on its last leg and most likely burning oil so i hope its just the turbo since i picked it up already, and if not then i have a better turbo than stock anyways since i was planning on buying it soon to begin with. i'm doing the turbo and a coolant flush and oilchange on sat and i'll see what happens. lets hope this works

Hey guys, I am new to this forum, I am having the same problem with my car, i have blown head gaskets before, and don't think this my problem... I am burning oil, but not losing coolant or overheating, and my coolant is still green, but the smoke comming out the tailpipe is white and smells like burning electrical wires... I noticed puffs of smoke comming out the exhaust once in awhile. Now it somkes lightly at idle and alot when boosted, any ideas? turbo seals?

Hey new to the forums too. My girlfriends 1996 GSX has the same problem. I drove behind her today and noticed it smoked, a big puff when, the turbo unloaded. It makes a small ticking sound as well. It sounds like an exhaust leak of some kind. What oil does everyone recommend?

alright everyone i put the new turbo in and it stopped smoking!!! so it was definitely the turbo so thanks to everyone who helped out and gave me some advice. the new turbo is amazing and i'm happy with the way it only took part of the day to pull out the old stock one out and put in the new EVOIII big 16g turbo. thanks again. now my car is running like a champ and i cant wait to get the turbo broke in so i can to some real pulls.

i was gonna say that too, but then i noticed that he lives in arizona, so im pretty sure the temp there is still pretty high! it really sounds like a blown HG, how does ## oil look man?

i am going to go and put at least a couple hundred miles on the new turbo to break it in a little bit before i go do some hard pulls. the people i buy parts from recomended it...
