I feel like an idiot... ... but clockwise or counterclockwise to increase boost? and how many turns do you think per lb?

It all depends on the controller. The two i've owned all i had to do was little 1/4 1/2 turns to turn it up alot. Once you get it in the sweet spot very little turns will make a big difference.

On a ball-and-spring MBC, turning the knob IN INcreases boost.

Or, as Colin Chapman explained to Mario Andretti about the manual adjuster lever for the antiroll bars on the Lotus 79, it's hard when you go in, and soft when you come out.

It's highly recommended you set it off-car using compressed air and an accurate gauge before installing.
