which would you recommend that i consider buying?

A) bone stock 95 Eagle talon tsi awd w/87k, JDM tranny, for $5200

-or-

B) 95 GSX w/135k on the car, 40k on JDM 6 bolt motor, t3/t4, intercooled, everything, for $8000

Keep in mind that i live in CA, so i don't want to have anyproblems when i have to go smog it. Also, with all the mods on the GSX, will that harm its reliability? i need this car to last me at least 4-6 yrs., and i'm a poor college student who doesn't have a lot of money to blow on constant car repairs. Also, i know my mom will be against the GSX b/c it has so much done to it that insurance will consider it a "modified car" which will increase my rates. Is this true? (AAA insurance)

Hands down the 95 tsi IMO. just cause it probably hasn't been beaten to death. Plus you have the choice of what goes into it. I have never heard of the higher rates cause of a "modified" car. But i'm in maryland and i know cali is alot worse on car law. They wouldn't know unless you told them right, plus what would constitute "Modified"?? putting an air filter on is a mod but nothing to raise rates over.

stock one. less chance of it being beat on like turbogs-t said.

the gsx, cause every thing is done, paid, no wait time or install time, cause it's finished. So what if it's been beat on, just buy a jdm 6 bolt long block for a couple hundred bucks and swap it. Then it's like brand new again. ;)

I would recommend the Talon. Its like a clean slate, and has a lot less wear on the internals Im sure.

Now, if you decide against getting it, let me know, Ill take it! :thumb:

I guess it would kind of depend on what you plan on doing with the car. If you want a fast car and not have to worry about anything then go with the GSX, but if you are looking for something more reliable or want to do eerything yourself then go with the TSI. Me personally, I would go with TSI.

thanks for all the advice. i'm gonna check out the tsi tomorrow!

anything i should keep my eyes open for?

if i do end up getting the tsi, around how much will it be to "transform" it into a '97-99 eclipse? (front and rear bumber, turbo spoiler, anything else?)

Check the turbo for shaft play so you can make sure its not going out. Do this by taking off the intake, and use your fingers, with the car OFF, try to move the fan like thing in the turbo up and down, or back and forth. It it moves, then its shot.

If you want a 97-99 Eclipse so bad BUY ONE.

####ing people, there already aren't many Talon's to begin with in California...

A stock TSi AWD is definitely going to be more reliable than the heavily modded GSX. As well, it has probably been babied a little more than the heavily modded one. The JDM tranny goes a long way too, because a new tranny for these cars is hard to find and expensive. I bet the tranny on the GSX has taken a serious beating.

If you are a broke college student looking for a reliable car, then I honestly wouldn't choose either one. Don't get me wrong, I love my TSi AWD, but it is a little costly. You could get an Integra Type-R (14.9 - 1/4) or Prelude VTEC (15.0 - 1/4) if you want a car with comparable speed but a higher level of reliability and much better gas mileage.

I agree with this actually.
If your looking for "reliable" then I wouldn't get either or. The honda/acura class will stand up to a beating and runs well time after time.

If your set on either or get the unmodded car.
If you want a very good running highly reliable car I agree with Captain Cow. Think about a honda/acura.

If you do get either one I recommend a secondary car, especially if you are leaning towards the GSX.

Here's my opinion:

Talon
+ low mileage, stock means it is LESS likely to have been beaten to death but still possible..I question why it has a JDM transmission.
+ IMHO, Talons look better..a 95 or 96 with a 97+ Talon/Eclipse Bumper looks bad ass..Talon also has the ground effects side skirts on the AWD model.
+ Its cheaper
+ You can have fun modding it the way you'd like and it would be a excellent learning experience learning how to upgrade your car yourself, plus you can get it right without having to worry about what the previous owner did to it.
- It might cost a bit of money to upgrade it

Eclipse
+ already modded, don't need money to upgrade it
- don't know what abuse has been done to it, or if it is even tuned right..it could be tuned wrong and cause problems down the road
+ Its an eclipse, which is apparently the body style you like
+ It'll be quicker than the Talon
- Its not going to be a very effective daily driver because it'll cost a bit in gas with all the upgraded components
- More wear and tear on the components as you drive it because the turbo and upgraded components put more strain than that of a stock one, which can lead to quicker than normal occuring problems

As for your question how much it would cost to convert a Talon to a Eclipse, it just depends on where you can get the parts from and how much it would cost to paint it to match your body. Its probably anywhere from $400 to $1000 to get the bumpers depending on where you get it. Then the paint job is another extra buck. If you want a Eclipse then I recommend you get a eclipse.

hmm broke college student needs reliable car, i suggest you should look into an n/t you still get an eclipse, you get a better tranny, worse motor, and itll be way cheaper then the gsx unless you buy it from a dealer.

your really had to ask us with the choice. hands down get the tsi. you get to choose everything that goes into it. and you save the couple grand to put into mods anyways if you where gunna buy the gsx.less chance of the car being beating. def go with the talon. :p

If the Talon has a "JDM" gearbox, then it's not exactly stock.

Still, I think you're much better-off with it than the bi-annual hell of a smog wrestle. If you find a hookup for a dirty smog, it probably won't be around next time. And NEVER breathe a word of it. That alone is enough to make you tend toward stock.

The car will be as reliable to you as you are to it, regardless what one you get. A modified one will be less fun, because it'll usually be less reliable.
