OK I currently bought a 92 eagle talon tsi AWD and I'm trying to get all of the bugs worked out on it. One problem is that the starter works but sometimes it doesn't mesh with the flywheel like it should. It'll start on about every 5th try. I rotated the engine by the crank to check out the condition of the flywheel and it looks fine. No missing or broken teeth. I go to advance auto to buy a new starter, come home and put it on and it does the exact same thing. It's like the gear doesn't come out enough to contact the flywheel like it should so my next question is do automatic awd dsm's take a special starter or do all of them interchange? I guess it's possible that the guy that sold me the car had the wrong starter up there. Anymore suggestions???

It is specific to your year AWD A/T.
...and btw, we have flexplates and converters not flywheels..

your gettin the wrong starter I'm almost positive I had the same problem for a long time I went to nappa and got one and it was fine after that :thumbdown

Yeah, I figured it out the hard way. Finally got the right one from advance auto and could not get the top bolt to start to save my life. Come to find out they had repaired the threads with a heli-coil for a standard 3/8's bolt. So after stripping two metric bolts I took the starter back off and realized what they had done. I was so fed up I went and got a refund so I'll go somewhere else tomorrow and look now that I know what I need. :D
