I just got a set of mechanical gauges but the sender for the coolant temp gauge is about a foot too short to reach the thermostat. Is there anywhere else I can put the sender?

There really is no better place to tap it. You say your wire is too short. Coming from the firewall, other places like the water pipe or the radiator is even farther. Your best bet is to cut the wires, and solder in about 18 inches of extra wire to it.

mechanical gauges do not have wire's to extend....you need to buy an electrical gauge ;)

In my 2g with a autometer electrical gauge, I drilled the top of my water neck and put the sender there and just ran the wires neatly around and through the steering boot up to the my pod.

Yeah, but you're venting, too. Not the best source of information.

Your only choice with a mechanical gauge is to get one with a longer sensing tube. Otherwise, go electrical (which you should do anyway. The thirties were a long time ago).

Yeah, you're not going to want to cut and splice that thermocouple on the mechanical gauge.

Those old mechanical gauges are VERY slow to show any Temp changes. By the time that gauge MOVES it may already be over heating.

As previously mentioned you want a new Electrical style gauge with its OWN sending unit.

This is true but based on setup in my car at the time it compensates for my car leaning out. That setups has since been gone. I know what I'm doing, this is not "speculations or guessing" I was just using the pic for reference with where to put the sender. The OP can also if he wants to depending on how much money he wants to spend look into a painless kit. It comes with the temp sender, relay, instructions. So that now controls the fans and temp in the car. My old man has it in his car and his car doesn't cross 180 but he also paired that with SPAL fans but thats not the topic. I'm just stating options out there.
