when racing, after the launch (I slip from 3300 or so on decent tires), when you get up to your shift point, do you let off the gas or not?

i believe thats called powershifting? (staying in throttle while shifting)

you can do it on a fwd car and not break stuff cause you just spin, but on an awd it might cause premature tranny ownage

i include premature tire wear in the catagory of breaking shit. same with anything that you have to replace in your car because of wear from abuse.

i also include bad halfshafts in the catagory of breaking shit. i have seen stock non-race cars that get bad half shafts from romping on them. i think even thought the tires are spinning it will still be harsher on the halfshafts.

Something i would never do myself. My friend does it in his honda and it does help ALOT when we are racing.

Yea, I agree that it's the FWD boys that can do this. As long as you can shift rather quickly I think you would be fine doing it.

Cliffs: I'd never try it.

probaly the 2 worst things you can do to a car

powershifting
burnouts

the fact that you had to ask that question dosent instill much confidence
ps unless you can powershift correctly (keep the revs from moving ) dont do it unless you enjoy spending money.
;)

This is all new to me. Hmmm, I know what I'll be doing tommarow. Might be fun

i just let up on the gas just enuff to drop the rpm to match the the gear im shifting into. i dont let up completly and i dont keep it to the floor and never let off. dont hold it to the floor while shifting ull over rev and if u mis shift somthings gonna explode.

aluminum shift forks+powershifting= One hugeantic mess of a tranny

My tranny went south after a few bangs on the stick and now I am still putting the new one in.:thumbdown All of that and I didn't even powershift. But, go ahead and be the man!! We'll all be waiting for you in here ;)

i put my tranny through hell a few times. powershifting, not using the clutch, holding it to the floor while shifting. and suprisingly with 160k miles on it and it dont grind in any gear and shift real easy and smooth. im alot easier on it now. but if the car is pissing me off im a little hard on it.

not using the clutch ...thats scary

this thread has me completely lost now....

i have an AWD dsm...how do I shift properly w/o breaking shit?

you let off the gas thats how heh...

I do keep the gas down on mine rarely, it does help in racing, just shift quickly and if you miss a gear, or even think your going to miss it let off quickly or you'll go KABOOM LOL....I wouldn't do it in a AWD though.

Ive power shifted before at the track twice. The first time went pretty smoothly, didnt do much for my E.T.s. The second time I grinded the crap out of second gear! I wouldnt recoment it. :talon:

TMO makes a solution for 1gs. Use the stutterbox feature and it drops the rev limiter to 6500 while you shift even with the pedal to the floor. This way you can still hold boost between shifts.

a guy previously stated that a three stage rev limiter(i thought they were called 2 stage but oh well) works great. that is the same thing as a stutter box.

maybe a 3 stage has your stock rev limiter, a launch limiter, and a shiting limiter. but i thought the launch and shifting were the same.

DSMLink V2, No lift to shift, my buddy in an AWD has it, its sooooo wierd to do, but really cool. Powershifting is we tod did.

Well I can shift EXTREMELY fast, and I can count the number of times I've missed a gear on high rpms on one hand since I got my new clutch a year ago (replaced clutch about 1-2 months after I got car). Since the clutch, I've mishifted maybe 5 times while racing. And like I said, I can shift VERY FAST, so maybe I'll try out some stuff, since the general consensus is worst case is I'll spin a bit.

I don't completely let off the gas, only about half way. I have tried shifting with my foot down to the floor. Holy shit, I could tell it made a difference, but my clutch and tranny didn't like it probably...

the one i have is 5k launch, 6k no lift to shift, and 7.5k redline. its very hard to get use to. took me a few tries before my brain would let me leave my foot on the gas. ive had it in for 2 months and havent broke anything yet.

What I have always lived by is; drive smooth, speed is a byproduct.
So many people try to smash, force, slam, or kich shit into place to shift the best. I have tried alot of different ways and the best (read best ET) has always been a quick, precise, smooth shift. I let off the gas and shift as quick as needed. I see alot of guys at the track that try and shift as fast as possible and there car will buck for a sec. Just use common sense.
