when does the gas light come on, on your 2g eclipse?

i have a 1998 GSX my needle shows around a quarter tank and my gas light is on, is this normal?

My gas gauge is dumb:

Full tank: goes a little about the F
3/4 tank mark: ~50 miles
1/2 tank mark: ~100 miles later
1/4 tank mark: ~50 miles later
E mark: ~50 miles later

From there it will keep dropping. I've done 80 miles below the E mark before. I can do 60 once the light comes on.

Do I like driving the tank down that low? NO. But I'm a poor college student and didn't have the cash at the time for gas.

My record low was 15.2 gallons on a fill up. I was so poor and stupid I could have won a NASCAR race.

Filling up when it hits E is about 12 gallons. I get about 23mpg.

I know I have only seen mine on once & it was below the E line & I havn't ran it that low ever since.
