It's not as hard to shift without using the clutch as you might think. I used to have an old Chevy 4X4 country beater that would go through clutches like they were made of butter. I got tired of replacing them and just learned how to drive without the clutch. As a matter of fact I would actually shut the truck off when stopped, put it in gear, and just start it to get it rolling. Of course it would not make sense here in Houston traffic, but it worked fine out in the boonies. As long as you can get it rolling, it's not so bad. As stated, you just don't do it at the higher rpms.

Although I have never tried it with the Eclipse.

If you know the car well and can match revs, it's not too hard to do. I sometimes do it in traffic in low rpms/low gears. Grind too much and your toast, though.

I find toe-heeling and double clutching to be lots of fun during "spirited driving." Gets you out of corners fast. :)
 
heel-toe shifting (or toe-heeling as no_skillz says and how most people actually perform it) is basically downshifting while breaking. You can do a google search on that and read up on several different techniques. I actually use the inside and outside of my foot instead of toe and heel. Brake down (using toe), clutch down (left foot), press/blip gas to rev match (heel), clutch up, brake up, gas.

double clutching is a form of downshifting. Clutch down, push to neutral, clutch up, press/blip gas to rev match, clutch down, down shift, clutch up, gas.

You can also double clutch while heel-toe shift.

Do a google search to look up on why we heel-toe/toe-heel and double clutch. I heel toe all the time, esp after I got my coilovers installed :thumb:
 
GSEclipse, that type of shift is called "powershifting", its keeping your foot to the floor while shifting. Benifit- you keep your revvs and get a small hop out of it while shifting. Negatives- if you miss a shift, you will revv sky high and if you are unlucky, you will have serious engine problems becasue of overrevv.

Double clutching is is not for downshifting, its for shifting period. Old jeeps and landrovers had NO synchro mesh gears, they had straight cut. So becasue of that you had to double clutch: Clutch in, shift to neutral, clutch out, clutch in, shift into gear, clutch out. I got very good at it recently becasue my offroad jeep has a leaky clutch line so it doesnt hold pressure very good, so dbl clutching is what i have to do to get it around :).

Shifting witout a clutch will not ruin synchros, if you know how to do it (match the engine revv perfictly to ground speed to shift).

Speed shift is simply putting the clutch down quarter to half way down to shift, less of as shift time, saves time.

And no one will learn how to find a shifting technique without driving and practice. Everyone finds their own method and what works best by DRIVING and shifting. Time and patience is the key to it all and it is not something you are going to read and find the groove. As far as shifting without the clutch, RPM's are your best friend when lose your clutch and have to limp it home. As stated above, every time you are riding next to a semi, ands hear the gears grinding a bit, it is because it is MUCH easier to shift without it. You will grind more trying to use the clutch then you would without it. And with enough practice, you realize it can be done on any car with no ill affects. The whole thread is almost like asking if your car will have the same H/P as a car with the same setup.

The best way to shift on a daily driver? Push the clutch, shift up/down slowly, don't drop the clutch or let it slip too long. End of story.
 
funny i always thought "double cutching" was skipping a gear.

This is true. You could always double clutch when shifting especially when your syncros are out or you don't have any. But if you got em, double clutching for up shifting seems a waste effort for regular driving.

What helps most is to learn the RPMs for each gear going at a certain speed are. This of course comes with practice.
 
on my metro i only use the clutch to go from a stop and go in reverse, for all the other gears i rev match

It would be the perferred method in commercial vehicles, saves on clutches, plus the RPM's on those diesels don't go much higher than 2k.

I wish I could find the link that tells what each of the fallowing are because I think some are, already getting mixed up. There's a big diference in "powershifting" and "speedshifting", the link also told about every other technic but oh well maybe someone will post it I can't seem to find it.
 
Shifting without the clutch, thats a new one! Then again I am no expert driver.

So wait a sec, I'm still confused on what double clutching is, that whole process of tappin neutral and revving would creat a longer time span to shift. This would mean the shift is slow then a str8 shot? Or am I wrong?

I did read the term posted above but can we elaborate or maybe be a little more paricular for us who aren't 100% understanding?

yes dbl clutching takes longer time to shift. You dont want to do it in your car because u have no need to. The only reason that there is double clutching is becasuse old old old landrovers, jeeps and 18 wheelers had NO SYNCRO GEARS, they were STRAIGHT CUT so it requiered two actions to shift instead of one quick drop from one gear to another.(this is my second time explaing this on this thread)


oh yea and if you all are going to practice powershifitng, be careful becasue you can break lots of things if you are not careful, practice at low revvs first :)
 
As said earlier, you don't do "double clutching" on a car with synchros. One way of being very good of driving a stick is something my dad calls "clutch control". You go on a downslope, tail end on the lower end of the slope and go up and down on the slope using just the gas pedal and the clutch pedal. You keep doing it until you a) don't stall the car and b) don't have to touch the brake pedal. It took me about 30 minutes to figure it out when I learned how to drive but once I got it done, I knew how to control the clutch and the car. And once you figure out the way to do this, you can try to do it faster.
 
basically, your saying practice staying in relativly one spot while on a hill withough using the brake? im pretty good at that already...but how long are you supposed to let the clutch "slip"? is there a limit of some sort? i figure you shouldnt do it for THAT long unless you want to fry something

What exactly do you mean by clutch control? I hope you don't mean an extra long clutch drag, which wears very heavy on your clutch. :nono:
