Hey guys, last week i bought a 96 GSX. the car came with 17 inch EVO ENKEI rims. needless to say, i drove the car for a week. got a flat just to find out that the back of the tires were rubbing on something. I'm just trying to figure out the best solution to fix this without buying new wheels. even though i now need 2 new tires.

are spacers an option? and if so, how do i determine what size i need???

I tried using spacers one time and never had any luck. I've seen people use them without issues but my wheels came loose 3 different times in just a couple months.

If you use them, make sure to check the lugs frequently to make sure you don't have the same issues.

What rim and lug combo were you using? This happened to me cause I wasn't using the right lugs.

Op your going to need longer studs, they are so much fun to put in:D NOT.

This was actually on my mustang, removed the spacers (thought they were needed but weren't) and never had another problem. A friend put 2mm spacers on the front of his SRT last week and he almost had them come off yesterday.

Like I said, some people don't have problems but I did.

OP, you may not need longer studs if you only need a very thin spacer.

Oh, and just to add in. the tires that came on the car were 235/45r17s. and the car is lowered on ksport springs if that helps

Most Evo wheels are +38 offset. +38 is supposed to work with 235/45/17. It definitely works with 245/40/17. Where, exactly, and on what, exactly, is the tire rubbing? Or do you have older, +46 offset, Evo wheels?

ill see if i can upload the picture i took of the tire yesterday when i took it off. i would say about 2 inches of the inside tire was completely gone at a 45 degree angle. not sure what the piece was, but it looked like a piece of subframe? that was at the exact same angle that it was rubbing on

Heres the car and rim:

First off, Wow. Just Wow.

Now. Front or rear tire?

In any event, that's the wrong shape for it to be the typical rubbing on the rear knuckle. That looks a lot like rubbing on a spring perch.

What size tires are you running?? Evo rims "should" fit with no issue due to the offsets. If your sidewalls are to large you'll rub on the spring perch or to wide will hit the knuckles. That picture is deff more spring perch rubbing then anything else. You are really lucky you didn't have a horrible blow out!!!

Could have bad camber have a role in the wear of that tire? I have seen some rear tires on lowered DSMs that wore on the sides like that due to the wrong camber. Rims looked slanted in the back so to speak. The car in question looks lowered a few inches so that's why I asked.

Ksport springs on some yellow struts... I'm assuming Koni? i wasn't told what brand they were when i bought the car. but to everyone asking, it is the front 2 tires that this happened too... and i will be taking her in to get an alignment before i go ahead and get a new set of tires. only scary thing is going to be the hour long ride home when i know the other front tire could go at any time...

and while i already have a thread started. what are some good brands of tires for around 150 a piece? thinking about trying to find a 235/40r17 so the side walls will be a little bit smaller...

If its rubbing, I'd be guessing on your struts. Take the wheel off and look. Chances are something is going to look shiny, like a tire has been rubbing and polishing it, or really worn. If you don't see anything, my guess is your toe is so ridiculously out that its eating your tires.

I would have to say its something rubbing while your turning because if it where to rub all the time it would be/smell alot worse. In all honesty your gonna have to jack the car up under the control arm to check it out or take it to a shop with an alignment rack to see if they will check it out for you.

i did notice some minor rubbing when i took the front passenger tire off. I'm not sure exactly what part it is. but it was at probably a 45 degree angles, and just a piece of black painted metal. my first step obviously will be to check the alignment. i guess the guy who dropped it on the ksport springs never got it aligned after ...

for anyone just reading, i will put my setup into 1 post. if anyone is running the same thing can you let me know how it worked out? if spacers were needed? and if it really is just an alignment issue?

Suspension:
Yellow Koni Struts
Ksport lowering springs
Lowered 2 inches, front and back

Wheels:
From what I've been told they are 17 inch Evo 9 rims. pictures are located above

Tires:
Dunlop Direzza Star Spec 235/45/17s

No on spacers just go with a smaller tire

yup that is exactly what i am doing, i talked to my buddy and brought my car to my mechanic, who is gonna put the car back to stock height  and put some slightly smaller tires on it. which is only the beginning of my problems :ohdamn:

Seriously? Just "no" on something that is known to work when used correctly?

And to the OP: unless and until you know what was hitting the tire, raising the car makes no sense because almost everything near the tire moves up and down with the tire. Find out what was rubbing before doing anything.

Im still curious to what this was rubbing on. I was thinking about buying a set of evo wheels, definitely dont want this issue. However cars dropped 2in and I dont want to raise it back. Wanting to know what this issue is?
