its sunday, so theres no shops open. so i can get it pressed and wanted some information on how to hammer it in. id wait till tomarrow but im an hour from home and really need to get back. so any help would be great.
 
I got into an arguement with someone the other day about it. they said it wouldnt hurt it at all and they do it all the time. i think ill have to wait till tomarrow to take it to a shop. ahh well...what could i do in my spare time? anything u guys do when ## waiting on parts to come in etc?
 
I don't think you should hammer directly against the bearing. Maybe with a block off wood or flat piece of metal etc.. This will help get it in evenly, and not damage it. If you get the old one pressed out, can you use that same press to get it in?

If the car isn't your daily, maybe you can try cleaning up the hub/ knuckle, and/or replacing the wheel studs. Those seem to give people problems when you least expect it, and are fairly cheap to replace. Now would be the best time, while you have everything apart.
 
You're right he may not see problems with it right away but it's more than likely going to reduce it's lifespan.


Then again, I don't have this problem since I own my own press... Just trying to give you some advice.
 
Man Project, i wish you were from around here. You would be a great help right about now. I wish i knew how to try to find someone with a press. Not a garage but someone with their own personal garage that has one.
 
In theory if you were to only strike the outer race of the bearing then it shouldn't damage the bearing. That would be hard to do with a hammer or a mallet. But if you had a piece of pipe the about the same diameter of the bearing but a little smaller you might not cause any damage. Another thing to consider is if the bearing doesn't go in square the you could get yourself into more trouble. I have destroyed good bearing with hammers on accident before. If it were me I would wait and get it pressed in and spend the time in between washing the car or something.
 
Yea thats what im going to do. I dont understand how it goes in. Like, if you were to do it yourself, you just get a pipe a tad bit smaller than the diamater of the wheel bearing and just keep patiantly tapping? Sounds like the hardest part or worry is the lining up.
