ok, i have a 1991 eagle talon tsi awd 5 spdand i been having problems alot latle with my car so i tried changing my e.c.u to see if it would help things, so i got my friends e.c.u out of his 1991 turbo lazer fwd 5 spd and i put it in my car but my car just would not run with his e.c.u in my car, like it was like if i had a bad air leak as if didnt re-circulate my b.o.v but it also reved really slowly. why didnt it work are the e.c.u's that different? thanks for the input guys. :thumb:

I assume you have a MD166262 and his was a MD166260. There isn't much different between the two, possibly one resistor.

I can't help on the problem without more information. right now there isn't enough to go with.
What problem do you have with your ECU in? Any CELs? His acted differently?

Steve

yes you are right on the codes, ok my car i think somethings wrong with my e.c.u because i have gone over everything twice! and it still back fires from like 5500 up at wot, also wile i had them out i opened up my ecu and when i opened it it was like a smack in the face it smelled like rotten fish or some thind, so i opend the other one and it didnt smell at alll it just smelled like his car, is that like a tell tale sign at all? what other info do you need to help me more, thank you so much for the help, karl

yes his acted differently, with his in it didnt idle, it reved very slowly and ran very very poor over all, and also his ecu looked brand new inside and out to me. just let me know what else you need to know

smelling like fish on an ecu is a tall tale sign the caps are leaking and its on its way out, you can pull the capacitors and clean the board under the caps thourally with rubbing alchol and a q tip, and replace the caps with new ones, you might get away with not having to buy another, but most of the time once the caps have leaked its un fixable.

Yes , by caps I mean capacitors, its a fairly common flaw with our cars and possibly others. the capacitors over the years tend to start leaking out the bottom onto the board. Usually a horrible odar fills the car (fishy smell), or the ecu begins clicking for no apparent reason. The goo that leaks from the capacitors is very accidic and begins eating away at the board.

If you'd like more information on this top check out the electrical section here http://vfaq.com/index-main.html

As for the other ecu not working properly in your car, the MD number right on the front was different meanign there not exactly the same ecu's. The possibly have differnt mappings which are toally over my head, if your gonna replace the ecu get one with the same MD number so you know its gonna work correctly.

As long as the capacitors haven't shorted and blown up burning the board, they are usually fixable. Just takes longer to find and fix all the places where the electrolyte ate the circuit traces. JohnnyPC1 and ITSME4G63 ECU's were pretty well eaten but they were both fixable.

1sick91tsi, the electrolytic capacitors in the front center of ECU will leak acid from the bottoms over time. That's what you smell. As far as when his runs funny in you car I still don't have enough information to speculate a guess.
