i just bought my first dsm and i asked my buddy what some real good mods are and he mentioned on getting a ecu out of a 95 why is this and are the power gains pretty big???

It's not that you will get any power from it (if anything you'll probably end up with problems of the firing order) but it's probably that it's an eprom unit. Eprom units can be "chipped" while your stock 97 can not be. There are programs like dsmlink that let you tune your car with an eprom ecu. What I'm trying to say is there are a lot more options with an eprom ecu.

I agree but keep in mind that the firing order issue isn't a big deal. Swap 1 with 2 and 3 with 4 and the car will run properly (the 95 ECU uses an inverted CAS signal). Either a dsmchips chip or DSMLink will handle this without issue.
