what to do with these hoses????

ok guys what ive got is a 97 eclipse gst that i reciently bought and am going through it getting everything right.. i was wondering what to do with the hose that comes out of the air intake that used to go to the bypass valve that is no longer in use because of the aftermarket blowoff valve installed?? also further on down the air intake flex tube before the turbo there are 2 lines that come out of the hose.. the top one is connected but the 2nd one just has the fitting sticking out with nothing attached to it.. where should this go or what should i do with it? any help would be great thanks...
 
What kind of aftermarket blow-off valve? Unless you have a MAF and translator, you really shouldn't be venting the BOV to atmosphere. The large tube that leads to the BOV is where the BOV charge recirculates into the intake tract. You want that tube hooked up to the BOV until you get the proper parts needed to unhook it. Until then, or until you get a BOV that can recirculate (I'm assuming you have one which is impossible to recirc) cap off the recirculation tube with some duct tape so no debris can fly into the intake and mess up the turbo.

As for the other two vacuum lines: The one on the left goes to the Evap Emissions Canister, which is located under your battery. The one on the right goes to your valve cover nipple; the one on the passenger side of the valve cover. I'm assuming there's a little mini-breather filter on that now if there's no vacuum hose going to the intake nipple. Do yourself a favor and connect the valve cover to the intake with a piece of vacuum hose and install a Fram G2 or Purolator fuel filter in the line to keep the oily mess out of the intake tract. It'll look like this if you do it:

the blowoff valve is an apexi dual chamber blowoff valve..i guess i will just cap that hose off since the previous owner didnt feel the need for it.. as far as the vacum line what are the pros/cons of doing it the way you have it done as compared to just a breather filter on the valve cover like mine does? if i were to keep the breather filter on what should i do with the nipple on the air intake? just cap it off? assuming this is a vacum line would be be causing any kind of boost leak? also could it be contributing to my idle sure possibly? thanks
P.S. i just want to make sure everything is hooked up properly since it should be.. the guy who owned it seems to know what hes done with the car and his friend owns a shop that builds nasty dsm's he claims my car will run a 12.7 in the 1/4 but that just seems fast to me... but aside from that im trying to fix these hoses that have been left behind and not done away with
 
If he knew what he was doing, he wouldn't be using a vented-to-atmosphere BOV without a MAFt setup. The previous owner didn't feel the need for the recirc tube because he cared more about hearing the sound of a BOV than he did about doing things the proper way. But hey... to each their own. If you want to put everything back the right way, you'll get a BOV that can recirculate or shell out the cash for a MAF and translator.

The valve cover vacuum line feeds excess blow-by and crankcase fumes into the intake to be burned off as an emissions control. Okay, so that's nice and all, but it puts a lot of sludge into the intake which coats the turbo, intercooler, and throttle plate, which is bad. You'll see some people put the breather filters on it and cap off the nipple on the intake. The reasoning is that the filter will filter out the bad oily stuff and the intake will be sealed up and not have any leaks. Okay, so that's nice and all, BUT where does that oil in the filter go? Eventually, the filter gets soggy and starts dripping or spraying oil all over the engine bay. Also, I have been led to believe that the ECU accounts for all the emissions control stuff, such as EGR, and automatically adjusts the air/fuel ratio based on what it thinks it's going to be seeing. So if you block that off, it still expects to see an amount of air coming from the valve cover. But it's blocked off and not getting into the intake. This theoretically can throw off A/F values by a small amount. (Wisemen, if I'm getting any of this wrong, feel free to correct me.) With the fuel filter in the vacuum line, the amount of air still gets to the intake, but the sludge stays out of the intake and doesn't get into the engine bay. Other people use shiny metal catchcans to do the same thing.

Explain your idle surge problem a little more. And to help everyone know what they're dealing with, fill out your car modifications profile as best you can. It saves time so no one has to ask what parts you have, what other mods there are, etc.
 
whats a MAFT? mass air flow translator? how do you know i dont have one? if i knew what it was i might be able to help explain if it has one.... sorry about these dumb questions but i am new to this whole dsm/eclipse thing sorry
 
A GM MAF is a thin square box that replaces the stock MAS (big black box by the air filter) as an air metering system. To install one requires special upper intercooler pipes since it's usually placed near the throttle body, as well as a MAF translator, which converts the GM signal to one that replicates the stock signal and also can be used to roughly tune the car. Since the MAFt reads airflow AFTER the BOV, it's safe to vent to atmosphere and not worry about the air lost through the valve. With the stock system, that air is already accounted for in the ECU and is lost, throwing off the A/F ratio.
 
No, that won't do it. The air is still being counted by the MAS before it gets blown off. The MAF in blow-through format is the correct way to vent the BOV to atmosphere; the ONLY correct way that I know of.

Edit: I've only run across one Galant VR4 with it, but does VPC allow for venting to atmosphere? I forgot. If so, that's another correct way of doing it.
 
well im thinking if the 12.7 is true a lot of it is probillay from the transmission being geared differently than stock.. since it is..but i dunno im new to this

I agree. How is it geared different? Sounds like the guy may have been talkin up the car to sell it to you. Especially since it's non-recirculation and he just left an open hole straight to the turbo! :toobad: Not to mention the other hoses you are considering capping off. Besides, if you said it's surging do you really think it's tuned well?
 
ok well heres the deal i didnt buy it from the person who did all the mods to it i bought it from a dealer.... i then after i bought it, got the guys name off the previous title and looked him up and asked him about everything and he let me know.. therefor he wasnt trying to talk up the car so i would buy it since i had already bought it.. as far as the tubes the recirculation tube was capped off when i got it i just wasnt sure if it should been hooked up to something.. the valve cover vent hose is disconnected with a breather on it and the intake side nipple is exposed but i will run a line as describled earlier in this thread with an inline filter.. as far as the idle surge this may have something to do with an issue after the car was tuned... as in the dealer that it was traded to might have tried doing some work and pulled/changed something they shouldnt have...i was just asking questions to make sure everything sounded right thats all... also there are some other things that may contribute to the idle surge.. i was told that the car does not have an o2 sensor anymore but im not so sure what the purpose is anyways it would just run rich in this case right.. thanks guys for your input im just trying to clear a few things up because i realize there are many unknowns.. i will try updating my car info when i get time thanks
