I just changed my lifters today. i couldnt prime them and a mechanic said i dont have to as long as i put them in oil over night. So i changed the lifter and everything put together. the car is quieter but still has tick. and the car still sputters when i drive. sometimes it drives like new then it will start sputtering againg. like misfiring??????? what you think it is?

I read somewhere that priming them involves putting a pin inside an access hole on them to drain the oil and then set them in a cup full of new oil and let them fill up and do it again. They don't have to be full but you should be able to compress them just a little bit.

a tick can also be injector tick. After injectors get so old they get loud, but shouldn't effect anything. It's a leap, but it is possible that your injectors are ticking and because of age starting to malfunction occasionally leading to the shuddering/misfiring

yes 420a's have lifter tick due to the poor design of the lifters for oil to pass around them.

if it is infact lifter tick, if you go wit PT lifters/rockers your problems will be solved.

+1 on injectors
sounds more like injectors to me. especially because your having drivability issues too. However if you want to try one more thing with the lifters. you can bleed them.
1. Start the engine and let it warm up to operating temp.
2. once its completely warm slowly raise the RPMs from idle to 3k (you should take about 15 seconds from idle to 3k) do this about 10 times
3. Now turn the vehicle off let it cool down all the way. they should stop ticking.
If this didn't work check the resistance of your injectors. they are probably the cause

I changed the spark plug wires and now the car runs great. still has the loud ticking noise. im going to try and bleed them like said. if that dont work what do you think it is. ticking noise but drives good.

There is a small possibility that your head gasket is starting to go, and because of this an oil passage has been blocked not allowing oil to flow to the lifters and restricting oil flow to your head all together. change the oil and let me know what color the old oil is.
