I was driving my car with the power steering belt off today and realized how much I don't like my power steering. Now I don't like not having power steering either. Above 20 mph going straight and mild maneuvers not having power steering is very nice. The feedback is ten times better, my inputs are smoother and more acurate, and my line through corners are smoother.
Of course the downsides are that it is hard to turn in parking lots, at intersections, sharp corners, emergency situations, or any time trying to turn quickly.
I could swap a manual steering rack in but I don't want to (is it lower the ratio, I think) any ways if any thing I would like to be able to turn the steering wheel less to turn the wheels more.
It would almost be nice if the power steering wasn't engaged untill you put a decen't amount of input into the wheel.
Now I know I can't reach all my goals for any reasonable amount of money but I am wondering how close I can come.
I will probably do the mod so the steering doesn't cut out at high rpms.
From what I understand the higher the rpms the less pressure the system creates (or I guess technically the more it is restricted). Would it be possible to to set the valve somewhere in the middle so there is less assist than stock but still enough for quick steering response.
Does any one have any other ideas how to improve the power steering?
I am guessing it would be hard and expensive to give it real speed sensitive steering. Any ideas?
