What should I do about broken valve guides?

I am about to bring in my 1g head to have a valve job done on it, and the valve guides are all cracked inside the head. I would like to replace them but am curious what the best replacement would be. OEM guides are 15.99 a piece, and I see turbotrix sells bronze ones for 9 bucks a piece. Thats still a ton of money, but are there any other alternatives that are just as good? I dont really need a high performance valve guide, just an OEM replacement.

Mine came with the headset when i did mine and that cost me $140. I dunno but that sounds kinda pricey to me just for valve guides. Stock valves arent even that much. Least you caught them before they broke off and ended up down inside with the cylinder :talon:

Yea, I mean I purchased a used 1g heat that had already been hottanked, and it just arrived today. The thing is literally so perfect I could eat off of it, however when I looked into the ports I could see that all 16 of the guides were severely cracked. Upon looking at the head it looks like the prior owner killed all 16 of their valves, and I assume thats when these must have cracked. Is it much work to have a machine shop replace these? They just simply pop right in correct?

The guides need to be replaced and they do not come in a head set. Talk to your machinist and he should be able to get the guides for you and install them correctly. Prepare to pay around $600-$700 for a correct rebuild of the head. Bronze guides are preferred but not everybody is willing to use those because they are harder to work with.

you dont need any valve guides, just take them out :)

Rob you have any used rims forsale for slicks. Poor college student cant afford new ones. :(

Some of the headsets do have the valve guides. The set that i bought definately had them cuz i had to use them. I dont know exactly what it would cost for a full rebuild but, if i remember correctly mine was only $230 but i only needed 4 valves replaced and i had them replace all the valve guides too. There was some extra work involved with the caps also. They werent setting properly so they fixed that also :talon:

I'm using the hardware from my 2g head on this hottanked 1g head. I'm having a 3 angle valve job done which runs 75 bucks, and at most 3 valves replaced, so thats not too much. The valve guides it looks like SBR has them for 40 bucks, and then there might be possible decking to the head, which is 30 dollars. All together I dont see a reason for a head rebuild to run 600-700 bucks? Valve guides at 40, OEM valve seals at 50, 3angle valve job at 75, decking at 30, thats only 195 dollars right there, thats 400-500 bucks away from your estimate. Granted the hottanking is already done, but thats mild still.

A valve job for $75

Jackson auto machine has great head packages, from normal rebuilds to cnc porting. Give them a call and they could surely help you out.
