I just want to use my electric buffer and so some buffing and polishing on my car. Whats good to use I have never really buffed a car be for I just wax it all the time. I use Mothers was and I like that but i want to buff the surface scratches out so it really shines so what do you guys feel is the best and what are some pointers. Thanks.

I am looking for a polishing compound for getting rid of my surface scratches. Should I use just wax or is there something else I should be using instead?

I also am a big fan of mothers. They have a 3 step program that I have founds works good especially when you use the clay bar as an additional step before hand. It's all pretty simple and should be able to get at any autoparts store that carries mothers. Clay bar and some kind of that in between wax spray stuff(california shine I think is what mother's is called) and you spray the stuff on and run the clay bar across it creating a good cleaning suction and removes alot of the residue. Next I would go with the 3 step program mothers offers, 1) oxidation remover and old wax remover, 2) pre-wax/polish/gives deeper richer look, and 3) I step it up and use the Mothers Reflections wax which is a synthetic wax and is awesome but about $20 a bottle. There's my $.02 and here's a link to mothers website which has really helpful info and goes into a little more depth than what I just wrote. http://www.detailguide.com/ Good Luck

Edit: I personally do all mine by hand and do the clay bar once or twice a year and the full 3 or 4 times a year and wax monthly and wash atleast weekly. I live on a short dirt road so it's impossible but I do what I can. I have done the 3 step all by buffer but I use the hand cause once you know the car and have a good method it doesn't take much longer and in many cases does a better job I believe.
