I was just cruising down the highway going 55mph when i hear this loud crunching. I'm thinking to myself, what the heck is that??? I start to pull off and i downshift and my clutch feels very...not good LOL. and the crunching continues. I got off the highway and pulled over and the crunching noise continued, but got louder. I get out of the car and check it out, all looks good. i'm confused....

I get back in the car, turn it on and it smelt like burnt waffles and syrup. it was GROSS. i start moving and i shift from 1st to 2nd and hear a loud CLINK, at the same time I felt something in the clutch peddle break, well...this huge chunk of god knows what flys out from under my car. its this big round metal thing, a little bigger than my palm. My clutch instantly burns up and smells like complete ass. I call up my tuner and asked him what it could be, he was stumped. So I really have no idea what this is, and I have shown it to people who have worked on cars for most of their lives and even they are stumped, can somebody help me?

I know what it is. It came out of the end of your awd transmission. I've never seen that one before. The fwd trans does not have that piece. To be honest, I'm not sure what it does. I took an awd trans apart today and it's there. How the hell it got out of your trans is another thing. I hate to say it, but you are probably screwed. I cannot imagine that ever happening. However, it did. Anyway, get a breakdown of an awd trans, and look at the end housing by 5th gear.

Good Luck.

I was waiting for you to chime in. :p If anyone knows, you will. :thumb:

Appreciate that. LOL At least it's approximately the same size. I can't be for sure until I see a picture of the transmission. You would have to tear the whole ass end out of it for this to happen. I would be astonished if it turns out to be this piece. Nothing else is the same size that I can think of.

Anyway, when the problem is located, please tell us as I'm dying to know for sure if this is the piece from the transmission.

Good Luck

Ok, I can't check out the car until tomorrow night. I don't have the tools to check out my tranny. It's crappy, because we got our first snow tonight :(

That part is the big mystery. You'd need a hole the size of a bagel.
I think some pictures are going to be the key.

Well, heres some pics of where the belt is missing. Sorry for the crappy pics, we dont have a jack thats low enough to get under the car. I'll probably end up using the jack that came with car and take off the tire so I can get a better picture. I'm hoping that this peice was not apart of my car and that smell was just burning rubber...

look closely, its those 2 peices in the direct middle. I had crappy lighting.

At least I think my last idea was wrong. Defiant was right, you 'd have to have a hole the size of a bagel for the trans part to come through. I'd have given a dollar to seen that one. I wish I could see it in person. Remote diagnosis at times can be frustrating to say the least as you have very little to work with. Anyway, if you the belts and it's a rubber covered part and it appears to be from the rear of the engine, Perhaps the air conditoining clutch has come apart? Jeez, I'm somewhat embarassed and almost afraid to speculate. Just look around. Take some good close ups of the front of the ac compressor, and anything that looks odd.

We can still solve this.

like you say, if it came from the tranny it should be easy enough to find, just look for a crater OMG in the housing. I agree. Pics are needed when you can get to them. I know the feeling, ALOT to do today and we finally got our first snow as well down here.

excatley, tranny fluid would be everywhere... , so it must be
A) crank pulley
B)AC idler pulley
c)AC Compressopr Pulley
d)AC compressor pulley fell off,the magnetic clutch from the ac compressor is what you found

Ok, I'm new to DSMs so I have a general idea of what I'm looking for, but not really :( . I tried to take off the upper timing belt cover mainly so I could get a better look of the engine. The bolts are too tight to take off, I know theres stuff I can buy to loosen them up so I can take them off. I want to get as good of an idea of what is going on before I take it into a shop. So what can I use to take off these bolts, and where should I look. I'll also go search for all those things you guys have listed.

Thanks a lot for the help so far.

I got the car up on boards. It made the loud squeling noise and smelt like burning rubber and it smelt unbelievably rich. :barf:

like i said before its gotta be something to do with the belts and pulleys if there are belts squealing and the smell of burnt rubber. the only things that size dealing with the pulleys are something to do with the crank pulley and the a/c compressor pulley. the a/c compressor pulley assembly has multiple internal parts because it has a clutch in it that could have eaten itself up and spit out the pulley and what ever part that may be. i have a spare one of those in my garage i will check that in a bit and see if it looks familiar.

well its definatly not from the ac compressor. the part the bolts the pulley to the compressor and has part of the clutch on it is way to small. it has a rubber piece but is way to small. only thin gi can think of now it crankshaft pulley.

Yeah I think it is the crankshaft pulley. If not that then that peice somehow flew up into my car and tore apart my belts, how that happened I wouldnt know.

Looks like the car is going into a shop tomorrow.

do you not have the tools to do this yourself?? its a pretty easy thing to do. to be sure its the pulley you can take off your drivers side wheel then the plastic splash gaurd and it will be right there infront of you.

Yeah I'm sure I could do it, and trust me I want to. But since I live with my mom now I have NO tools, all my carwork was done at my dads since he has all the tools. Only problem is, all of our jacks are too high, I guess we could just use blocks. My dad is paying for the visit to the shop though, and I want them to check other things out as well.

I guess I could just tow the car to his house and we could do it there. But honestly, on a scale of 1-10 (1 being a newbie to cars, and a 10 building motors) how hard would it be to replace the serpentine belt (i heard that dsms dont have those, please correct me) and check out everything else.

there are 2 belts one that spins the altenator waterpump and power steering, and othe other that spins the altenator. its really not all that hard to do its just in a tight space i would rate it probally 3-4 because of the space and not having done it before. Me having done it before i can get it done fairly quick. I would say if your dad is going to pay for the mechanic and you trust them then to just go that route shouldnt charge that much for the work. good luck let us know what they say.

Got the car back, looks like a peice inside the crankshaft pulley broke and took some belts with it. Everything was replaced and the car runs great now. Thanks for everyones help. :thumb:
