Can someone tell me real quick what this part is and what may happen if it's broken like this? Thanks

But I have EGR delete. Can I just leave that alone like it is or do I need to pull it out and put a plug in?

Engine Coolant Temp switch.
Wrong. If you don't know the answer, don't post. You only make things worse by posting incorrect information.

that is the egr vacum temp switch.. when car gets to operating temp it opens up and then functions the egr.. i had that same switch on my 90 california car
Correct. It is called the Thermo Valve in the FSM but is also referred to as a thermo vacuum valve, emissions thermo vacuum valve, thermal control valve, EGR Thermovalve etc. It is part number MD103867. It allows the EGR valve to function once the car is warmed up to normal operating temp.

You can just leave it there, it's not doing anything since it's not hooked up. Or if you just want to clean it up you can remove it and insert a 3/8" pipe plug. That's what I did on my thermostat housing.

Hey thanks! I didn't think it was hurting anything by being there. Never noticed any leaks. On to changing out the coolant temp sensor now I guess :)

glad i could help on this.. im surprised though that you didnt at least have one vacum leak from it..that was a dumb design anyway for california cars LOL

If it's not hooked up, there is no way it could have/be a vacuum leak.

I'm looking at the 1g FSM right now and it makes it sound like the Thermo Valve was only on non-california cars. It says:

EGR control solenoid valve (California)
EGR temperature sensor (California)
EGR valve
Thermo valve (Federal)

My 1g is a Federal car and it has the thermo valve. I assumed that all 1g's came with it but looking at the FSM reads like it was only on the federal versions and not on the California versions. I've never had a California 1g so I can't verify this.

Weird. Is the little sensor on the bottom of the radiator on the passenger side next to the lower radiator hose a level sensor or temp sensor? I can't find a diagram.

It's been flushed several times. Why do you say that though? Almost sounds like you know something I don't, LOL.

That is called the thermo sensor. Like DSM1G90 said it controls the fans. On 1g's, unlike 2g's, the ECU has no control over the fans. The radiator fan is controlled by the thermo sensor and the A/C fan is controlled by the A/C Control Unit. The main fan is set from the factory to turn on at 185* and off at 172*.

thats why you are the wiseman... your right mine was federal its been so long since i had that car LOL.. least i got 1 out of 2 right.. i agree flush that radiator and block pretty nasty!

Sorry all of my 1g cars have had the ECTS on the water neck like that. I live on the entirely opposite side of the country and have never seen a cali spec engine.
It has nothing to do with California cars. All federal 1g's are setup like that.

Oh, that's not mine in the pic. Found it while searching. Mine looks nothing like that, was just using that pic for reference.

Here's a diagram Brian (19eclipse90) made which should help. #2 is the thermo valve on all Federal 1g 2.0 DSM's.

Wonder why he has a different setup .. wonder if he just has a bad relay (which is under the box by the right shock tower..) that controlls the fan when the temp sensor closes (if this sensor is indeed working..) to send current to the relay to switch on the fan, thus using a manual or external form of fan control...

Toggle. It was like that when I got the car. I've had a hell of a time getting this car to run right so the fan switch is the last thing on my mind right now.
