Hi, in the last few days I've noticed a howling sound when I'm in first gear from 10-20mph. Its always whined a little but not enough that it bothered me, but now it seems like its getting louder. The have been adjusting my clutch pedal lately, as going into gears had been inconsistent since I rebuild my master cylinder, and now it seems to be shifting a lot better. There is about 1.5" inch play from the floor and 2 inch on top so I don't think its adjusted to far in either direction. So, any idea what could be making the whining noise in first? I can't really hear it in any other gear, except on coast down.

Could be anything ...carrier bearings, drive shaft vibrations or rear diff howling from ring and pinion backlash being out of spec.

My car has a rear differential and a drive shaft....? Sounds like its comin from the front to me. Its so annoying =(.

Sorry I see you have a GST ...my bad.

Just trying to help out.

Now I am thinking wheel bearing.

Its cool! I appriciate it too. I just thought maybe I didn't know half of what I thought I knew about my car for a sec there hehe. So maybe a wheel bearing eh? I heard these are a bi*** to change?

Would you still say wheel bearings if the car does it in first gear, say about 20mph, but not in 2nd gear at 20 mph?

Yeah, and I was playing around with it more, and when I seemed to slip the clutch a little, it reallllllyyy sounded like shit. =( Looks like its time to work on the tranny....boooo. Then again, maybe its related to my starter going out.
