ok so I have been trying and trying to fiqure out why my car won't start for the first time after my rebuild with very little luck. heres whats going on, I'm only getting spark on 2 cylinders I Know it's not the coil pack. I rotate the crank by hand and listen for the fuel injectors and spark.

For one revolution on the intake cam I get four sets of spark and fuel, only on 2 cylinders though...nothing on the other two. this seems wiered to me because I would assume that in one revolution of the cam you would get 2 sets of spark for 2 cylinders and another 2 sets for the other cylinders. if this is correct what is going on? why would I get 4 sets of spark to two cylinders but none to the others? Sorry if this is hard to follow, I'm very frusterated!

Ok so here is some info: origanally had a bad CAS but replaced it with a new on. I have a 96 TSI so the CAS is on the inside of the intake cam I origanaly noticed when replacing the CAS that one of the viens on the cam that travels through the CAS was slightly bent and possibly rubbing against the sensor ( the old one), but then I was abile to bend it back to place, and I'm pretty sure it's not rubbing on the new on

I really hope I can get some help here cause I'm at a loss of what to do THANKS,
derek

Hey,
So I actually just posted a similar problem, my car is cranking but wont start. One problem that I did have was that my CAS was rubbing to (when it was starting up, I could hear it knocking just a hair and could see on the back of the intake cams plate, that their was an area that was shiny) So anyway now my car wont start out of the blue. What does your car try and do when you start it? Does it just keep cranking over but never fire? I also stated in my post that when I was cranking the car, the voltage would appear to ground out. How did you test to see what cylinders were firing? I'm sorry I can't help to much, just I realize we may have the same problem, so I'll report anything I find that may be related to the rubbing CAS. Why can't they just be like the 97!!!!

ok so when I try to start it it just keeps cranking...every now and then it will catch and fire one possibly two cylinders but thats it. I checked my spark plugs and 2 and 3 are black and wet while 1 and 4 are shinny new with no fuel in the cylinder, so I hooked the spark plugs up to the wires while they where out of the cylinders and grounded all of them to the valve cover and found that I was only getting spark on 2 and 3... also I had the same thing on one of my viens it was shinny in a small area that you could tell it was rubbing.
I'll PM you if I stumble across the problem otherwise hopefully someone on the bored can help us, cause it sounds like we have the exact same prob.

edit: also yes the battery seems likle it grounds out I have a brand new battery and it dies within 1 min. of cranking (very fast)

ok so now I decided to swap in a transistor pack that I thought was good...got no spark at all...So I swapped the old one back in and now I only have cylinder #3 sparking WHAT IS GOING ON HERE...help please

EDIT: ok don't know what was going on but I got it back to sparking on 2 cylinders

Ok... by spark plug check 2/3 are not firing at all. (Black and wet)

Kinda mute but is the CAS adjusted properly? (I am used to dealing with 1G stuff so..)
You said you already tried swapping resistor packs correct with no solution?
Are the coil packs getting a open/fire signal from the ECU? Plug in volt meter and check to see if a signal is getting through. If not, possible bad wire, or coil driver on ECU.

I mean, there are only so many parts that deal with spark... unfourtunately most of it is in the ECU.

How are the gaps? are they correct? too far and they will not fire that's why I say something...
You go from plugs to wires, to coil to ecu.
Is you power transistor good? does it have solid connections?

Again forgive me if I suggest something the 2G does not have... as stated I am used to 1G stuff... Just throwing ideas...

well I just swaped in another ECU that I know is good and still the same thing. only sparks on 2 cylinders. Well it has to be the CAS then right cause I think I have checked everything else (coil, transister pack, ECU, Wires, plugs) This sucks I was really hoping I wasn't going to have to go through the hole timing belt thing again just to put in another CAS

"Kinda mute but is the CAS adjusted properly?"

i have a 96 CAS so it is non-adjustable

Thanks for the help,
derek

no kidding! The Cas is the 95/96 turbos is a pain! Actually have you done the timing without the special tool MDxxxxx? How are you lifting up the engine. If this turns out to be my problem, I'm curious as to how your going about fixing it. Thanx a bunch man.
-Chris

no I did not use any special tools for the timing belt, I just used a vise to compress the auto tensioner and stuck an allen wrench in the hole to hold it in place, and for the tensioner pully I just stuck two nails in the holes and was abile to pry it with a pipe to get the correct tension. as far as jacking my engine up I just put a jack under the oil pan with a 2x4 between the jack and the pan. hope that helps
