what is an "FIAV"?

in researching idle surge i came across a possible cause as "fiav" but searches have yielded little as to what this stands for or exactly what it is. little help? thanks!

trying to solve an idle surge problem on a 93 automatic tsi awd. i know there's the isc idle control sensor whihc is real expensive so we're trying to explore all options before we go the real expensive route and i was trying to understand what fiav stood for.

Fast Idle Air Valve, it increases RPMs while the engine is cold by letting in more air. When the coolant warms up it melts a wax pellet that causes the valve to close and brings the idle to its normal level.

FIAV is - fast idle air valve. You can bypass it /use FIAV bypass plate/ and do not run the coolant lines to and from TB, or eliminate it and get a block off plate. JMF sells them both. Eliminating means getting rid of ISC motor, which is not recomended, unless is a race car, or you have a standalone.

You can get an updated black isc's on ebay for a decent price. Save your self some time and buy one, I'd say 99% of the time thats what it is.The fiac or fast idle air valve is suppose to raise idle when the engine is cold this is why it has coolant lines going to the unit. The isc is beside it, on the bottom side of throttle body.
