Strange, I thought Eagles although cheaper and not as strong as some of your more expensive rods were supposed to handle at least 650-700hp. Tell him to spend the extra money on this next build and go with pauter rod. Still not sure how that could have happend with Eagle rods.

It certainly isn’t from too much power obviously because there are people make several hundred more hp than that reliably.

It was definitely a tuning issue. I wouldn’t buy that afr and knock statement until I saw a log right before it went. That thing went VERY lean and had some serious detonation. That is the only thing that tears a motor up like that. That AFR sounds lean to me anyway. I would want to know how much timing he was running and what type of fuel he was running on.

you do know what an SBR GT13 is right? A turbo that leon rietman has gone 137mph traps in. Now add maybe 150whp to that.(just brought up leon for argument sake) This guys head is untouched. rod broke on downstroke and his head/piston tops/spark plugs show no signs of severe enough knock to throw an eagle rod. DSMlink read no knock. I do understand that eagle rods can handle and have handled more power then they have been rated for. But, i just think this guy had a faulty one. The block was just rebuilt, fresh deck and shave on the head, new rings, bearings. Perfect time when the car was at its peak for a bad rod to let go.

The car is never ran on pump gas, as for the octane, I don't know offhand what exactly he was running at the time it blew up. All I know is he called me today and said the car was ripping, and according to the DSMLink there was no detonation, then the rod just folded and went straight out the cylinder wall, then the back of the block. Either way, its ####ing sick.

Yeah, its mine. For all informative purposes, car was running on c12, 16 degs of max timing, 12.0 tapering down to an 11.2 afr. 26psi of boost and 100 shot of nitrous, nothing that I havent done with it before. Unfortunately, I do not have a log saved for this run, in the excitement, the laptop was thrown in the back of the car and forgotten about, the battery died and it was not saved. Thing was running like it never had before, of course this always happens before they break.

Being that I built this engine, I was looking for every possable excuse to blame the failure on something I did, first was the rod bolt and bearing installation, all good. I questioned that the ring ends may have butted, siezing the piston in the hole, not the case. Tuning, deffinately a big factor, I wish I had undeniable evidence of detonation, plug looks perfect, piston top, everything looks fine. I would expect to see some pitting on the piston if detonation were this severe, or at least some sign in the aluminum at the edges of the valve reliefs. Faulty rod, another possability these were not new rods, 15k miles in the same engine, could I have weakened the rod previously? of course. I'm not one to sit here and shrug my shoulders and deny that its my fault it came apart, I'm the one who put the pedal to the floor. In cases where something like this happens, it is nice to know exactly what went on so it can be avoided in the future. Thats what I'm trying to figure out.

It deffinately came apart on a down stroke, the piston did not touch the head. My guess is the rod folded near center, for whatever reason and went out through the cylinder wall, right through the center of the casting plug, and then the big end busted the rest of the block apart, spectacular to say the least. It was making some good power, it was slipping my skinny hard 215/45/17s on the cold roads in 4th gear, never did that before.

Sounded great, pulling smoothly, one solid boom that shook the car, then it sounded bad, really bad, like someone threw a trashcan full of marbles under the car. My passenger was scrambling to get to the back seat, he thought he was going to lose his legs because the flywheel was coming through the firewall.

Some of you guys need to take a deep breath and settle down. I'm no different than anyone else playing around with these things, hell, if I were actually good at it, I wouldnt have scattered an engine across the highway, and would actually run good times at the track.
