sorry for the newb question, but which gas is best to put in our cars? i've heard most people put 93 in our dsms but isn't that bad for the car since it's for unleaded fuel only?

Get the highest octane unleaded fuel you can buy. The 93 octane you see at the pump IS unleaded. Usually you can only find leaded fuel at the race track. You CAN run leaded fuel, but it's bad for your O2 sensor. I run it once or twice a year and have never had a problem. Lead-resistant O2 sensors are available.

The reason you want a high octane rating:
The higher the octane rating, the lower your knock count will be. The lower your knock, the less your timing gets pulled. The less your timing gets pulled, the faster you go.

i remeber seeing 93 as a kid... too bad its not around anymore... i guess people dont want to pay 3.50 for a gallon of 93 around here... 3 bucks for a gallon + hills = one low mpg dsm... even tho i get about 20 mpg cuz i shift at like 2600 and drive at like 1600... im questioning if how slow i drive is worth it....

well if you in california, the best pump gad you can do is 91 octane.... god i hate cali...

unless you goto a track.. it's expensive as hell but you'll see incredible results. and even though race gas is illegal on the street, well who's gonna check the tank?

You've not been able to get leaded gasoline for automotive use for more than a decade now. You'll also find warnings to not use fuels containing MTBE, but if you're out here you use it or push it.

correct me if im wrong, but i've been asking my dad about this (he's a mechanic btw) but he's telling me that premium unleaded is premium unleaded(93) and unleaded is unleaded, he says there's a difference. hes also telling me premium gas can burn my valves or something like that.

in my chem class 1 day we were talking about polution and the teacher said your car dosent really need 93 octane... the other 2 are fine to use but you should use it once or twice a month because it helps clean your engine. so i dont think it will burn your valves.

I hate to say it but I wouldnt let you dad touch my car. He needs to get out of the stone age and realize that cars and fuel have come along way from the 60's and 70's. You will be fine running 93.

Same thing here. Tell you Chem teacher not to quit there day job. These are old wifes tales about certain gas burning valves and or it not being needed. If you are driving around and have no performace intentions then use the cheapest shit you can. If you want to get the most out of you cars performance then run 91 or 93. (what ever is available)

Tetraethyl lead had been added to gasoline to increase its knock resistance, and supposedly the lead salts that were a by-product of burning it served to lubricate the valve seat faces as by some mystical and mysterious process they would deposit there. Muscle and old car owners were in a blind panic at the thought of having this wonderous effect removed from their precious loads of shit, as it would mean the valves would bore straight up through the seats in a matter of five-thousand miles.

Oddly, in the heyday of leaded gas (and hand-operated chokes on carburetors), it was a miracle if a car's engine lasted 80,000 miles, let alone 100,000.

You'll find precious few turbocharged DSMs who have less than that.

Your dad may have been a fine mechanic in the Paleozoic Era, but he's been under hoods since the seventies and needs some light and air. You might tell him we've even changed centuries while he was away, although that's getting to be long enough ago that not all that many of us really remember it having happened.

"Premium" gasoline has more additives than "regular" gas, and those additives take up room that contains energy. Premium isn't as good a gas as regular is, but the knock resistance is needed by high-compression engines whether that compression is the result of assembly measurements or supercharging.

I buy vp c -drt bi monthly 55 gallon's at a time, so how can it be that they have not sold leaded gas in a decade, n e 1 with a few bucks can go buy c11 or c16 or vp red most race fuel contains lead. Pump gasonline has not had lead added since the late 70's or early 80's. I think that is what you were after.Maybe i did not read you post correctly. the epa banned lead use in pump gasoline a long time ago. 93 will not burn your valves it can only help a turbocharged motor. fill up with 87 a few times, then fill up with 93 a few times. and you will see why you need to spend a few bucks a pump the good stuff. i would rather spend the extra money and not have my timing pulled and my car run like a turd.
