Resolved What does this go to?

Okay. today i noticed that my car's lights where going dim. When I came to a stop and let it idel. Idel is about 700rpm. Then I was looking at alternator and saw that there was a random wire hanging not sure where it goes. Thats where yall come in help. It's comeing from the same spot as the two wires going to the alternator. Thankz in advance

Random Wire....Take a Good Picture....Random Wire is a very broad description, and on my 95 theres probably 15 wires in that general area.

The plug on the alt should have two wires connected to it for the regulator. Make sure those are both connected.

I will. It's coming from the same place as the two that go to the alternator but I will take a picture tomrrow. Thannkz

They are but from the same harness theres another one.

A decent picture would be nice. I'm not 100% sure on the 6 bolts, but it could be either the power steering pump sensor wire, or the oil pump pressure sensor wire according to my 7 bolt AWD. You should only have 3 wires on your alt. 2 wires are going the the quick release plug on the back of the alt. The other wire will be hooked up to a bolt above it. I'd bet dollars to bills that the wire you're talking about goes to a little nipple mounted on the power steering pump. Check it out.

+1 That would be my guess. Mine used to fall off constantly! Its not gonna make your headlights dim or make it idle low though.

If it's a female connector it's the powersteering wire. What it does I'm still not sure but they come off ALL the time! But that won't make your car idle down and the lights dim. That sounds more like an alternator going bad. Does your alternator have any oil or powersteering fluid on it? Also do you have a turbo timer? They will usually have the ability to show voltage. Some decks can also. That will tell you if your alternator is taking a crap or not. Do you have an amp, subs, or anything aftermarket running when it dims?

Think of that wire as a lead off of like a fuel pressure gauge, the power steering pump being the sender, when the signal shows a change that wire tells the alternator to push out more power so the car doesn't stumble or stall. just a bit of info for ya


Take the car up to an autozone and have them test your alternator.

the pressure sensor on the power steering raises the idle just a bit,to prevent stalling/low idleing,has nothing to do with the alternator.
