So here is my story first thing to consider is I’m poor keep that in mind. So my turbo on my 95 TSI awd is shot. So I need to get a new turbo and i may as well upgrade. I don’t have any supporting mods but I plan on getting them in the future when i have more money. So for now I’m fine with just keeping the boost really low. So i think everyone would say the obvious choice would be a 16G and that’s all fine and dandy but for just a little more money there are some turbos out there with more potential! So what turbos can i buy that will bolt up to the stock position with internal waste gates and have a lot of potential. I plan on building my engine this summer and I’m defiantly going with a stroker keep that in mind. I don’t want to have to get a smaller turbo now and when I build my engine have to buy another turbo and waste my money. Anyone that knows a lot about this I would love links to any other forums i could not find and suggestions of good turbos where to get them how much they cost and about how much HP they could make on a stroker. :talon:

Not being able to afford a large turbo + Wanting to keep the stock position (I'm assuming you mean not having to swap lines out, keep stock mani. etc.) + Getting bigger turbo now = Not possible.

Either, you're going to have to get a T28 (direct replacement for your T25) and has much potential, or go with a 14B w/ an install kit. The 14B can be had for about $100. I suggest the 14B for now, and save up for your larger turbo for the stroker kit later. That's all you really can do, you dont' have many options.

i Would be ok with changing a few lines and that kind of stuff but i cant get a new manifold and 02 housing and/or external wastegate right now. these are some turbos i found and it looks like they bolt up to stock position you tell me tho.

they all have an internal gate and the turbonetics one says it uses Mitsu housing . Im not that smart about this stuff can anyone explain why i cant buy these??

Get a 14b/16g/T28/etc turbo.

You also do not have the supporting mods for any of those turbos. You may consider it something you can "grow in to", however, you are looking at a LOT of supporting mods that you'll need to buy to run one of those things efficiently. Until you do, you will have a much slower spooling turbo, which you'll be able to enjoy seconds of before you hit fuel cut.

If you get one of those and put it on your car, this will be the sequence of events you will go through:

1. Golly gee, this thing is huge and looks great! Time to go drive on it!
2. Why am I not getting any power at 2500 RPM??!!
3. Wait it's kicking in at 3500 RPM!!!
3a. (moments later) I feel like my car just hit a wall at 4000 RPM!!!
4. [Insert your choice of curse] I hate my car!

thanks 2gGSX great explanation. it makes sense and i know i sound like i dont know anything but im really having a problem with buying 2 turbos but i see the problems im gonna have. But then it will just force me to save up and buy a fuel pump and injectors. also will i have this problem you talked about if i keep the boost low?

I suppose I overestimated the cost of your supporting mods. The very minimum you could get away with would be a Walbro 190, (S)AFC, logger, and a set of 650cc injectors (any larger and you're going to run into even more problems). The cost of those 4 items nowadays is roughly 550-600 dollars.

The *ideal* supporting mods would be a FMIC, larger injectors, DSMLink (especially since you have a good chance of having an EPROM in your car already), a Walbro 255 HP, an AFPR setup, and an external gate exhaust setup.

In the end, you're looking at way more than the cost of the turbo to really get the most out of it.

As for keeping the boost low, fuel cut IIRC is somewhere between 25-30 lbs/min of airflow, which all of those turbos will easily surpass, even at low boost.

Your goals REALLY sound unrealistic. You want a big turbo, but you don't want to spend money on supporting mods, but you don't want to go to small, and you can't go real big. Getting any turbo now, that's capable later is not possible, especially since you are going from a stock 2.0L block to a fully built 2.3L or 2.4L block. Any way you look at it, you going to be wasting money if you upgrade.

You're only logical option is rebuilding your stock turbo. The rebuild kit costs around $100. You won't have to buy ANYTHING else and you can do it yourself. You can not go to something like a 20g or bigger and it makes absolutely no sense to get anything smaller if you are building a block this summer.

However, something tells me if you are struggling with money to buy a turbo now, I seriously doubt you can spend the $5000+ to properly build a stroker this summer.

well right now im going to school and can only work like a few hours a week and in the summer no school so i get to work alot. Anyways i think you guys have convinced me against a huge turbo just not a good idea right now. When i build that stroker i will post another thread and see what my options are then. For now im just going to shop around for a used cheap turbo like the ones you guys suggested. Thanks! :talon:
