What amperage is the charging system relay on a 2g?

I believe he's just inducing a voltage drop in the sense wire using a relay. I'm more worried about what happens while the relay is switching and the sense wires goes open than I am about fooling the regulator by adding a voltage drop.

I actually tried it open as well. Voltage never went over 15.2. With 9v at the sense wire or zero voltage at the sense wire. I'm guessing 15.2 is the max the regulator will allow. :confused:
 
Well I still need to see a schematic (hand drawn is fine). I'll then see exactly what you've got - not just a verbal description (which never shows everything so you can't predict potential problems). Picture is 1000 words. Is that what you are doing - opening up the sense line with a relay that's activated by 25psi boost?
I also need the resistor value and wattage.

Also does anyone know where that 30a fuse is located?

That doesn't quite match up with the FSM. On a 1G:

There is a 10A fuse between the combo meter light and the L terminal. #11 in the driver side foot well box. That's the default circuit to energize the field.
The backup path via the alternator "relay" is directly off the ignition switch, no extra fuse.

The 30A fuse for the ignition switch is on the battery positive post block. It's the top level fuse for everything that is switched power.
 
Ah that one - called the generator relay in the Mitsu manual. From the Mitsu manual: "The generator relay functions as a backup for the flow of electricity to the rotor coil (field coil) if there is a disconnection or damaged wiring of the charging warning light." It actually is a resistor and diode in series but looks like and is referred to as a relay. (FYI: It is connected in parallel to the charging warning light, it's diode and the 10A fuse.) Something must be banging into it as I hear quite a few complaints of it being distroyed (and mine is missing for some reason). Don't know the amperage rating. You may have a problem getting an aftermarket one as every time I've asked they say they never heard of it. Should you find an aftermarket let us know where you got it and the price.

To update this thread a bit, the alternator relay or "generator relay" has to do something if you have it on your car. I recently had an alternator charging issue, where the alternator was putting out nothing at all. It ended up being that a wire was broke off the "alternator relay" and also it was corroded. Fixed it up and it runs and charges perfect now, at 14.5 volts like it should. Also it is located under the air intake/coolant overflow and is bolted down with a 10mm.
 
Again as I and Mitsubishi have previously said, the generator relay is a backup to the charge warning light not working. That alternator pin must have positive voltage (pulled high) for the alternator to work. This voltage is normally provided through the charge warning light circuit (bulb is off) or if that fails (like bulb is burnt out) then through the generator relay.

From page 16-14 of the 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse Service Manual Volume 2 Electrical [which covers 95-99 (relay shown on page 116 of Circut Diagrams)] /// [On the 90-94 it's on page 8-143 (relay also shown on page 8-143)]:

"NOTE
The generator relay functions as a back-up for the

From page 16-14 of the 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse Service Manual Volume 2 Electrical (which covers 95-99; on the 90-94 it's on page 8-143):

"NOTE

Is there a diagram with the component in question on any of those pages? I realize what it says, but a diagram is what illustrates the actual circutry.

Isn't the light just a simple resistor? why replace that lamp with this component instead, or why not just run a parallel circuit.
Please post a diagram if you are going through these pages on your book.
