Im looking into a 91 gsx and the only problem is where the rear trany bolt goes through the block a huge piece is busted off. i dont know if you can weld it back on or would it be easyer to replace the block? the car has 97000 on it and the guy wants $1000 for it sounds like a good deal. besides the block.
 
You should be able to weld on the missing piece just by building up the area with weld. You are going to want to heat the area first. Propane torch works good. You will need nickle welding rods to weld to the cast. Make several passes and build up the area. The heat from the welding will keep the area hot. After the area is welded, but the heat back on right away and slowly turn the heat down (or move it away)... like 3-5 minutes slowly until it's off. This will allow it to cool slowly and will help to prevent any cracking. After it has cooled, smooth it out and form it to the shape you want with a grinder or file. Drill and tap a hole for your bolt and your good to go.

I have quite a bit of experience welding i did it for two years and it is what my dad does for a living and that is just about something that is impossible u really would need an oven and an arc welder with cast iron rods i would suggest taking it somewhere and price it the amount of money u would have to spend on stuff to do it yourself is way more than what it would be to have someone do it for you good luck!
 
No where near impossible to do. Oxy/Acetylene torch, arc welder and nickel rod. It would be much cheaper to have someone else to do it if you don't have the equiptment.
 
If you don't have much experience welding with a stick, have someone that has experience welding cast do it. You must preheat it, and a propane torch is not going to get it hot enough. You must use a nickel rod and make short welds and immediately put the heat to it again. It must be cooled slowly. Also before it cools you need to stress relieve it by striking the weld a few times with a hammer. If done right, you won't ever have a problem with it again.

alright guys thanks for the advise. i think i have a pretty good idea of what needs done.
 
my friends dad welds for a living and he said hes going to get him to do it for me. except he said he has a different rod than nickle and it should work better. but now all i have to do is get the car. there are some problems with the guy selling it. so im fighting with him now. its from a dealer and the guy wants to back out cause he wants to put an engine in it and sell it for twice as much. but im still fighting for it. i hope i get it cause its hard to find a 91 gsx with 96000 for under $1200.
 
Ok just dropped my tranny today to do a clutch job
after its been down for almost a month from strange clutch related problems http://dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=251496
and immediately realized that the tranny was about a quarter to an half and inch seperated from the block. Not only was it seperated but the ear ( what my friend called it)
that the tranny bolt ( nearest to the slave cylinder ) was broken OFF the block itself.
Which this Really isnt good because ill only have three bolts to bolt my tranny back up to the block with. What do I do?

Sorry I dont have any pics to upload of it to be more clear on what im talking about.
So Ive discussed the possibitilites of welding it back on with a friend but
dont know if that will hold and probably will need a carefully done specific weld job,
and thought of making bracketing to keep the tranny flush onto the block or something?

Any ideas, has anyone had this issue and ever welded it back on, or made some support
or even just only ran with 3 tranny bolts?

I just got this 6bolt engine rebuilt and only have about 1200 miles on it and theres no
way I have money , time, desire to replace another f&*(&&* block.
What do I do.... :mad: :notgood: :toobad:
 
thanks man that helped Alot, i couldnt seem to find it when i searched.
I guess im going to have to go with welding it and maybe making some kind of bracket or something ghetto rigged because there is no well i can replace that whole block.

Any one with any experience on the welding for my situation.
In the link they were talking about the rear ear on the block but mines snapped in
the front were the slave is at?
 
They both need to be welded the same way. Make sure you clean it up real good first. The torch shuld burn off anything you missed. If it gets welded properly you won't need any extra brackets. If you are worried about alignment issues. You can bolt up the transmission and tack the piece into position. But remove the transmission before preheating and welding.
