Hey guys i was wondering if anyone has ever had their alternator belt just come off. I just replaced the alternator myself about two months ago. I tightened evrything and then took it up and down the street a few times then retightened it. A few weeks later it would squeel really loudly for a second while dowhifting with the air on and on cold mornings. When i tried to start it yesterday i heard a slapping noise inside the engine compartment on my side so i looked and my belt was just off hanging down on the crank pulley. its not torn, but i havent been able to get it off completely to inspect it. I dont want to move it for fear of the belt binding up on sumthing and creating more problems or overheating. Anyone with info please help im stranded!!

BTW its a 94 eagle talon

Yea it sounds like the crank pulley. The same thing happened to about me about a month ago. Whatever you do don't try to start the car. I did and the pulley split completely into two and made my timing skip. Replace the pulley and make sure your timing marks all line up before you try to start it again. If you can find a 1g crank pulley they are strong and less likely to separate

How will the timing belt skip from a separated pulley unless the pulley slammed into the lower timing belt cover and destroyed it?

i don't think it is the crank pulley, I've been fighting alt belts sense my rebuild and ever time it was the backing nut was loose on the main bolt, the one that is really hard to get to behind the oil filter I used lock tite on it and no more problem
not to dought you Oldman I know you know alot
p.s. I have solid motor mounts so almost all of my bolts back out

yea i thought it was sumthing down there because when i looked at it, it seemed like the pulley was over to the right farther than usual. how hard is it to replace that part and how much are they?

If you have 2.0, then it would be the same as this. If you have 1.8, you would have to call the dealer. They are not hard to replace at all, do a search at the tech article section or the timing belt article in vfaq.

Oldman- I have a 2.0 N/T and you said it would be the same as "this" in bold. What do you mean by "this"? perhaps you meant to insert a hyperlink? How much are the stock pulleys because all I can find are underdrives.

ROFL You know.... this. :D

Few weeks ago I lost this belt as well, and I have the same squeeling. I replaced the belt ASAP and I just have squeeling now, mainly on startup. I think it's the altenator, I'm sending it to get rebuilt this weekend if I do my clutch this weekend and I'll see if that cures it. The squeek actually comes from the altenator though, so do I just need a new altenator?
Thanks :thumb:

I still say it's more likely the crank pulley than the alternator. What you're describing is how it all started. First you get the squealing (especially on startup), change the belt, tightening...loosening....tightening....belt dressing...etc. Then a clunking noise starts to show during startup as the separated pulley started to make contact with parts around it until one day the alternator belt came off the pulley, left me stranded on the road. By this time, the pulley had taken a part of the lower timing belt cover with it exposing the belt, I was lucky that nothing was caught by the timing belt. I'm not saying your problem is the crank pulley for sure but it's definitely something worth looking into.

Bah! It's not like you're "an expert worth listening to" or anything! ROFL

When problems like these occur, the FIRST thing you check is the crankpulley. Unless you really don't like your car. No one likes having their crank pulley take out their timing belt and thus having to replace a couple valves.

Listen to Bruce, he's earned his title as Wisemen.

Yeah, I had some free time today so I jacked it up and sure enough the crank pulley is grinding into the side of the wheel well cover thingy. There is also another belt back there that is loose. Anyone know what it drives?

do you think i should replace that belt because it looks fine. Also, do you think the crank pulley problem would affect my power when the A?C is on? b/c when its on its sooooo slow especially at take off

I would change it anyway as they are cheap.

No, that is normal with our cars (2.0) even on a turbo model.

allright Oldman you proved me wrong, my squeal came back to day and it WAS the crank pulley sorry for doughting you

No problem, civil discussions are always welcome. ;)

What did i miss here? ROFL Hey guys im trying to remove the pulley and the grooved dampener part is stuck between the body and the motor. I tried loosening the crank bolts but my wrench would just click. I was going counterclockwise on the bolt then remembered what oldman said so i went clockwise but I only turn the motor. Any suggestions?

The bolts are out, and you cannot wedge the pullies up and out? Or you cannot get the bolts out.... to remove the pulley?

The crank pulley isn't held on by the center bolt, it's the 4 little 12mm bolts that you need to remove. put a breaker bar on the center bolt and situate it against something so the crank will not move CCW and crack open the four bolts, I suggest spraying PB blaster on them and let it sit for a while as they are known to snap.

No the damper is broken from the rest of the pulley and i cant loosen the bolts on the pulley to remove it.
