i own a 91 tsi and the waste gate is stuck shut. is there any way to get it unstuck or should i just buy a new one? or is it being stuck ok for now? i had a mechanic look at it (he works on semis) and he told me that all it wold do is increase the boost. i was thinking over time it would burn up the turbo. any input would be appriciatted.

Your semis mechanic is wrong, is he saying there are really no need for wastegates in a turbo system?

Describe how is the wastegate stuck shut? What have you done to come to that conclusion? Is it that the actuator won't open or the gate itself physically stuck?

Listen very carefully:

DO NOT DRIVE YOUR CAR AT MORE THAN HALF THROTTLE/4K RPMS UNTIL YOU FIX THIS.

If not, you will be replacing the headgasket, at a minimum, if not rebuilding your engine.

Your fuel pump, injectors, and headgasket CAN NOT keep up with the amount of boost your car is putting out if your wastegate is stuck shut. You're also spinning the turbo way faster than it was designed to spin. If you're LUCKY, have a big enough boost leak to keep your engine from exploding. If not, your engine is running on borrowed time.

The easiest way to find out what you need to do is by taking the turbo off and figuring out what needs to be done from there. You may be able to just replace the turbine housing for fairly cheap.

DO NOT IGNORE THIS PROBLEM. Dire consequences <strike>may</strike> will result.

Won't he hit fuel cut before anything like that happens? Thats what happened to me, fuel cut after fuel cut after fuel cut.

Hopefully, but not always. Some ECUs, for some strange reason, have just stopped fuel cutting after time. You'll almost always exceed the limits of the stock fuel pump before you hit fuel cut, too.

Yes, you should run out of fuel before you hit fuel cut on stock pump and injectors unless you have some major boost leaks.

think im just going to buy a new wastegate any decently priced places where i can pick one up?
