ok before i ask my question, here's the story. if u wanna go straight toward the question just look at the last paragraph.

ok so i was on my way home driving in a lane and i needed to change to the one next to me, but theres was a car in the way so i speed up to pass it up in 2nd gear n get to like 6k then shift. so i get home, turn the car off.

a few hours later, i got back in the car to run some errands. So im driving shifting at around 3k as usual and i notice i dont hear the turbo spool up or the bov anymore. so im like  (with my previous boosting moment in mind, thinking that it had something to do with it). so i park my car, and look under the hood with the car on. I noticed this clicking sound around the turbo and i was hoping to god that i did blow anything up in there. well, thank fully nothing was caught in there or anything BUT...

I notice the clicking noise is coming from the bracket that holds the wastegate arm. And wat do ya know...the arm is not attached to it anymore. I cant do anything to look at it rite now cause its dark outside. but is putting the arm back on a simple job. do u screw it on? weld it on? im hoping i didnt f*** up things too badly. thanks for any help

oh one more question, is it safe to drive the car in this condition? will it hurt it any? thanks

Find a paperclip or small cotter pin and stick it through the hole after putting the watergate actuator arm over the lever. Your going to have to pull the arm a little to get it over the lever on the turbo.

yea thats another thing, im not gonna break it off am i by trying to pull it up getting it on to the lever?

ok i tried putting it back on today and it stays on but if im boosting past 3k it pops back off. is there a way to keep it on there?

First sentence....

Mine did the same thing so when i went into work ( I work in an office). I just grabbed a paperclip, cut off a piece about 3" long and shove it in there. Been like that for a month and hasn't came off since.

will the paperclip fit in there? the whole seems to be really tight to even get the arm in there.

yea it will but i don't know what the standard size of a paperclip is but just try a few and get the thickest one for added strength. :thumb:

ok thanks ill try it when my car cools down some more. Also one more question, with the wastegate arm off, does the car boost at all or is it like running an n/t?

When mine fell off I saw around 1-3pounds, if I was lucky. I drove it all over the place like this (was to lazy to fix it, I had to drill a new hole, the old pin broke off inside and wanted to play hard to get...)

Either way I drove mine, mines fine - its like driving a dodge neon!... WEEEEEE! HOLD ON TO YOUR SEATS!

the arm fell off my friends 2g b4 and it was like driving a little neon yea but with this 6 bolt i have i think it downgrades to a stock crx. :p lower compression is only good for higher boost levels otherwise it really sucks

well i tried putting the arm back on with the paper clip (i used a really thin one) and theres just not enough room to stick that thing in there, is there a trick to it or wat? are you putting the paper clip after you put the arm in, or at once with the arm? i tried forcing the arm back on to the flap hoping maybe it was just a little loose last time, but it still kept coming off. the car runs as slow as dog sh*t with out it on. i thought my car was slow before even tho people told me it was fast...but now i see what slow really is.

don't worry...it's completely safe to drive around. just go to the local hardware store and ask for cotter pins. got mine for 18 cents. when u pull the wastegate linkage towards u, turn the actual linkage towards u too. this will put it at a better angle. have another person hold the wastegate down tight b/c it tends to go out just a bit. i did mine last week, it took a min. or two. oh, once the linkage gets hooked, turn it away from u just a bit and slide in. good luck. :thumb:

thanks for all the advice. why does the arm fall off anywy? is this common with dsm's?

They fall off because the pins brake from the daily actions of the actuator arm going back and forth - cheaply made I guess... just like all the dash E-brake lights that don't like to go out when its winter-time - cheap switches...

Be happy thats all thats wrong for now... :thumb:

i still dont get how u guys fit a paperclip or cotter pin in that hole with the actuator arm, i cant get it to go. i try forcing it in but it wont go. im just driving around staying under 3k so that it'll stay on there until i figure something out

dude, it doesnt need to do in the hole, just put something, so the arm cant come off, like jb weld,or you can bend the end of the arm a bit witha pair of vice grips, so the angle wont let it fall off

Where are you trying to stick the paper clip? There is a hole drilled into the wastege arm that will hold the actuator arm on. There could be something in the hole preventing the paperclip from going in.

They break often because they move constantly and the heat from it softens the metal everytime. All I did was push the arm on and move the flapper a little so it would move all the way on the flapper. then i just look to find the hole and shoved the piece of the paper clip in there. Make sure the pin or clip is perfectly straight when you put it on or it will be a PITA. You could try JB Weld but I don't think it will like the temps of the turbo very much.

well when i put the arm on the flapper, i cant even move the flapper anymore(becomes stiff cause the arm doesnt move) so i cant see it an angle where im supposed to put the clip in.

edit: ok wow im slow, after looking at ackerson's picture really clearly, the whole you guys were talking about was on the flapper stub thingy where the arm goes on? i never noticed that tiny hole and i was thinking you guys were talking about the hole in the arm LOL!

The pins on the wastegate accuator break because they rust PLUS the action of open and shut combined. You might not see the hole because the old pin is could still be stuck in there, use something to push it out. If it is stuck use pernitrating oil or wd40 to losen it up, you should not need to re-drill. Only do so as a last resort. Replace the pin and your all set.

I dont recommend a paper clip, it will not hold up to the heat. I used a small cotter pin from the auto parts store. The same style you find under the dust cap used to hold the front bearings in the brake rotor on a RWD vehicle.

your problem may have already been solved... but i figured id throw my 2 cents in the mix. i had the same thing happen to my 92 tsi and i tried the pins and clips.. neither worked. i ended up welding a washer onto the wastegate acuator and its held up for over a year now with no signs of letting go! just a thought if you have access to a welder. :thumb:

yea i was thinking of using a washer until i figured out that there's another hole on the flapper LOL. but yea finally fixed it. thanks for the help
