i have a 1990 vr4 rs, vin e38a 0001***. it has the orignal gearbox (trans). it is grinding at high revs in second and third, also hard to get into first. i know it is the syncros.
here is my problem. there is no replacement parts in australia and they say they can't get first gear from japan. is there anyone in the states that make artermarket ones?
thanks

In order to know whether there are parts available we need to know the transmission code. Mitsubishi stamped a code on the bell-housing. It will be a 10 character number starting with W5M. Once you have that you can compare to the codes listed here GalantVR-4.org: Tranny code question
That thread is on the GalantVR4.org website which has a few people who are in the know about non-USDM vr4s and may be able to help.

Another quick check is to look at the cover of the rear differential. It will have a 3 digit number on it which specifies it as 3-bolt or 4-bolt, LSD or non-LSD, etc. This will give a clue to the final drive ratio and can be an indication of which transmission you have.

thanks mate.
the trans number is w5m 332 wqwk. i found it on the other web site and it makes sence but i still don't know where to get the syncros.?

the problem is i can not get the parts to rebuild it, is there anyone that sells the syncros overthere?
thanks murray

I believe that the wqwk is one of those transmissions that doesn't have a compatible gearset with the USDM transmissions. This is the reason that people in the US don't switch to JDM switchable transmissions...they aren't rebuildable w/ the parts that we have. I'd say your best bet is just to get in touch w/ one of the more reputable DSM transmission builders and ask if they have any experience poking around inside an rs gearbox. Try Jack of jackstransmissions.com. Everyone seems to agree that he's a helpful guy and will take the time to talk to you.
