Right now I have some problems getting my car registered can anyone help. I live in KY and they are making me go through some crazy stuff. I bought a car that is registered in Ohio so it's an out of state car. The previous owner had switched out the interior from beige to grey and including that did the black dash. The VIN # on the dash wasn't switched with this process. So I have the VIN # from the old parts car (salvage) while my car has a clean title. The sheriff came down to inspect it looked at the vin dash said he can't license it and pretty much left. If all the other vin #'s match what can I do? I don't wan't to have to junk the car cause I paid good money for it. The car is a 1990 TSI AWD Talon not that it matters really. Please HELP!!!

You might look into "aquiring" a matching VIN plate.

I really don't know much about this, but they put duplicate VIN's on for a reason. If all the other's match I don't see the problem, but beurocracy can be a bi*** sometimes...

In CO the state patrol handles all of that. The Sheriff just looked and told you that? How did he know he could not? As long as the vin is not a stolen vin it should not be a problem, but who knows, maybe it is a bit different there. That would be like saying " I cant give you a title because the hood says 1.8 and the motor is a 2.0. Vin wont match"

I can't speak for Kentucky, but I ran into this out here on a 510. I had to remove the VIN tag from the dash, and instead of using the frame's VIN, the State assigns a number to the car (besides the license plate). You need to ask your Motor Vehicles people how to deal with it.

Do not pull a VIN plate from anywhere unless you're instructed to by an officer or your DMV. It's a Federal offense to fiddle with it (as it was for your seller to change the dashboard with its VIN).

that really sucks because once you get a new vin you will have to remove the whole dash to put it in. when i was doing my interior swap i forgot to swap vin numbers and had to pull the whole dash out to put the original one back in. i used a light coat of rvt sealant to stick it in their along with the old rivets. the law will never know you tampered with it LOL.

hope that helps

I guess I've never really paid attention to my VIN on the talon, but I've noticed that they are usually riveted to the body of the car. If the dash was replaced then someone would've had to take the VIN off the car separately. Changing a dash should not affect a VIN. It smells fishy. But here's a tip if you happen to come across a donor VIN. Place a few strips of tape across the VIN plate you will be using to protect it from being marred and setting off any red flags. Cut the sheet metal around the VIN and then grind the rivets down from the BACKSIDE-very important to keep the rivets from spinning and marring the from side. They will drop out once you've ground enough and you can take the VIN away from the surrounding metal. The bad VIN that you can't register with on you car can just have the rivets drilled out from the front since it will be discarded anyways. Finally take the tape off your 'new' VIN' and rivet it on. viola

how about using the vin on the title or in the door panel

While that will give you the original vin of the car, the dash id card must be correct. Ever notice how they are easily visible from out side the car? There is a reason for this, its the only way to identify a car without actually opening the car or having the title. It is actually not legal to cover that id plate either.

Good luck fixing this problem. When ever i sell dash boards from 1gs, I always remove the old vin plate so no one has a vin plate that has a # that can be tied back to me in anyway.

My wife did all the car titles for a large car lot here in Ky for 3 years. She says you need to see if the person whom you bought the car from did the interior swap or if the know who did. If not you need a notorized note from them stating the dash and interior was changed if the don't have the original vin plate. :talon:

i live in mo and when I bought my 92 laser 20 turbo 5 spd the dash was trashed and the vin plate was part of the car dash anyways i went to the mo highway patrol and explained to them my dilema and they issued an altered vin title hope that helps there was no charge just a one month waiting period :laser:

Yah thats what they told me also. I'm having trouble getting ahold of the guy he doesn't seem to want to answer my calls or call me back and he is in another state. Anything else I can do or am I maybe screwed?

I swapped out my interior in my old 1G and painted it a different color, at first they thought it was stolen but after I explained it they didnt really care. I had the title to the parts car I took the dash out of though so that helped me.

Where do I send the notorized letter to? Or do you know?
