VIDEO diagnosis needed. CREAKING noise - braking.

Hi everyone. I need your help diagnosing a creaking noise. It occurs under heavy braking. Coming from the front right area, maybe wheel, suspension or tranny.

absolutly garentee it is one of your calipers/ rotors.. honestly just got done going through this with my 1G.. what i did to find pin point which one was have some one roll out of gear so while your walking beside it to find out which one..

It's the front right for sure. What was the problem with your caliper?

when i bought the car, it was completly odvious that the previous owner did next to no maitnence to the car.. everything was pretty much factory.

Anyways.. I had two do the same thing to me. first was the front driver and second was rear driver. The caliper was pretty much completly hung up.. which in turn warped my rotor. hence you get the windup type sound and then it clicks/popps what ever you want to call it when it hits an unlevel spot in the rotor.

Mine sounded exactly like yours man..

So you rebuilt the caliper I assume?

I'm going to jack the car up and have someone spin the wheel while applying brakes. I hope it's the caliper and not something serious.

yeah i rebuilt them.. got the kits from a local parts store for like 10 bucks. new rotors as well.. it will get worse and worse if you do not fix it.. mine got to the point that it was neraly undrivable because it was almost dragging my rear tire

Cool. I'll check it out and rebuild it if need be.

Does your brake pedal vibrate while applying the brakes? If not, it could be something else. Symptoms of a warped rotor are pretty obvious. The steering wheel shakes and the brake pedal pulsates.

whenever mine did this it was warped very slightly.. just enough for the pad to give and relieve the pressure the caliper piston was puting on the pad/rotor. just enough for the wheel to kinda hop, sound like a pop.. i rebuilt my caliper and new rotors and completly took my problem away.. (identical noise OP is experiencing)

The pedal does not vibrate at all. There is no wheel shake or brake pulse. Just that noise. What are you thinking? Suspension?

I'll still definitely check out the caliper, rotors and pads. But I'm skeptical because this only happens when I brake hard and the car dips forward. Under soft braking there are no symptoms. Also, there is no noticeable feedback through the steering wheel.

In any case, I'll check it out if only to eliminate it as a probable cause. With any luck, I just need new pads (mine haven't been changed or checked in a while) or the rotors.

To be honest, yea, I'm betting on the suspension. Does that creaking noise also happen when you go over speed bumps? It could just be dry bushings on the sway bar, shocks, etc.

Strangely enough it doesn't. I even tried rocking the car side to side and nothing. The shocks are 2 months new BTW. Everything else is old.

I jacked the car up and noticed this.....

So it looks like it's a wheel bearing/hub issue. Probably need a new one.

I'll check my lower controls arms but I think they are ok. The play seems to be coming from the wheel hub itself. But thanks for the great link.

So I replaced the wheel hub. It wasn't the cause of the creaking, but at least my car handles better now.

I did a quick check of the suspension arms which were good, and brakes which also appear to be ok but very dry and rusty. The only thing I forgot to check was the CV joint which is lame because I had to remove the drive axle from the hub when installing it. It was in my hands and I neglected to check it out. Oops.

I'm planning on rebuilding the calipers but I could use a little help. I need to source the parts and find a good write up on how to do it. Any help is appreciated.
