92 turbo awd laser, any ideas on what would cause a very noticable vibration throughout the whole car, my dash will vibrate but its coming from the engine bay when reved to 1500+ rpms, does it in neutral as well as on the road. motor mounts look good, balance shaft belt possibly????

balance shaft belt or a failing silent shaft bearing aswell can do it. A fuel injection or ignition timing issue can make it vibrate aswell. Does it still run well as it does the vibration/

Yes the car does seem to still run really well still quiet and has lots of power, how serious is a silent shaft bearing?

silent shaft aka balance shaft bearing going bad usually is about the end of the life the engines bottom end. In my experience when i find a spun balance shaft bearing usually the rest of the rod and main bearings are in poor shape aswell. If this is infact your problem the sooner you spot and fix the better off the engine will be. I would check your oil and oil filter very carefully for metal particals. If you catch it early enough you may be able to get away with just removing the balance shafts and the engine could last. But your first steps are gonna be checking the oil for metal particals, taking the timing belt cover off and confirming alignment of the timing marks, and then taking off the oil pan to inspect damage as necessary. Last time i saw a bad case of this was taking a donor 1g engine to put into a 2g. I took the pan off to inspect before hand and found the following images. i removed the crankshaft had it polished, installed with new bearings and removed the balance shafts and replaced the oil pump. I also flushed the oil gallery. Turned out to be a great reliable engine after this. But if yours is this severe the engine will have to come out to remove the crankshaft at best.

I just changed the oil, it was a little black but definetly no shavings or metal in there.

is it a shaking of just a vibration of all the panels n stuff in the car. im just wondering as i have 2 1g's and they both vibrate due to the exhaust resonating and the engine. for me, its just an old car with old panels

Yes it does have a small exhaust leak around that flex section, is suppose that may cause it.

It shouldn't vibrate even if it's 15 years old. I would check to make sure the balance shaft's are lined up correctly.

Yea im going to check that very soon, as we are doing a timing job on the car. Im not running the car right now anyway but how bad is it for the engine if the balance shafts are not lined up right?

That could be your clucth, more precisely your disk. At the moment when youre engaging your clutch (1500 rpms) your pressure plate pushing the disk (you know this) but in that moment if the disk is damaged it would shake. More likely the springs on the disk got some space and that could cause the problem that youre dealing with. I know that is hard to check this but maybe it would give you a hint. You know your car better, what clutch you have and how long you havent changed it. Try to rev in neutral, And see what happens, if stutters again then never mind this post.

yes it does do it in neutral but I some how think this may be the problem still it sounds like it could be it. The sound its making is metallic like

I would get this fixed first. My A4 had a leak in the flex pipe and it created a bad vibration in the car.

Its a lot of work just to check the clutch, but i suggest, check the simple things first. Find a person to rev the engine for you and you look around the car, under the hood , under the car until you locate where the sound and vibration is coming from...Let us know if you find a problem, Im kinda curious too

Hard to tell where exactly it is coming from, but the motors not shaking at all so ive ruled out the motor mounts. Sounds like it could be coming from the clutch area, Im doing the timing next week so ill find out if its something with the balance shafts, if not ill tear her down for an ACT 2600:D

You may want to check and make sure that no portion of your exhaust system is making contact with any exhaust heat shields. If it contacts any portion of a heat shield, the heat shield will easily transmit this vibration throughout your car. Check the downpipe, cat (if you have one), muffler, etc. This vibration can be very noticeable inside the cab.

Will do, the vibration is very noticeable inside, I have 4 or 5 other keys on my key chain and it will jingle themOMG , It actually vibrates the inside more than the motor itself.

you said i could be a metal like sound vibration?... it could be possibily the heat sheilds.. thats wha happened to me... went under the car... and found it .. it was my heat shields.. so i just made sure they were secure (with plastic ties) .. and no more sound.. but if ## car panel is shaking than i dono LOL..

Ill check the exhaust soon....when it quits raining here:rolleyes: but it doesnt sound tinny like exhaust it sounds kind of heavy metallic.

I grew up in Stillwater, went to O.T.H.S., now I have been living out in San Diego for 14+ years. Great weather never see any Mosquitos. Wife swears they are out here but they never bother me. I used to spend quite a bit of time out at Pushaw, mostly on the Old Town side.

Anyways good luck with the car and try not to feed to many Mosquitos this summer.

They havent been to bad this year because it was dry....until now that it rains every day, we didnt even have any snow this year I think we maybe got 9 inchs all winter... but anyways back on topic I did check the exhaust seems ok Im starting to think its something with the clutch...or transmissionOMG
