Versatile AFC and Logging

I am trying to look at what piggy back fuel system to go with. As well as a cheaper data logger. I want to find something that I could run on various vehicles. Mainly because I buy and sell them and would like something that I can just move from car to car.

On 3si.org I have been reading about free logging software that goes on a palm, though I haven't looked into whether that is 3si specific or if it'd work on a DSM.

As for an AFC, I've looked at Apexi's stuff. The SAFC-II and the Neo. I haven't taken too much time comparing the two to each other, but I am trying to search out more options first. I wish DSMlink worked on other cars...

I mainly plan to use them on DSM and 3si vehicles.

Any ideas, please let me know.

As far as piggyback fuel computers are concerned you have very few options. HKS used to make one called the Super AFR but that was discontinued. Used ones pop up once in awhile on ebay.

The Apexi SAFC is by far the most widely used with a proven track record and will be compatible with the cars you mentioned. The NEO has 16 different points where airflow (fuel) correction can be made vs 12 for the SAFC II. However, the SAFC II can be programmed with 2 different maps for different conditions (eg-race gas vs pump).

The NEO also allows control of Honda's VTEC. So if you think you might ever use it in a Honda then this might be the way to go. Otherwise, I would personally recommend picking up a used SAFC II.

The only datalogger that I have personal experience with is Pocketlogger, but it appears that it may have been discontinued.

Some guys are having good results with the free datalogging programs, but I have not personally used any of them.

The MMCD software is free and works for both the 1G DSM & 3/S. I have v1.8 loaded on my Palm m515, but many use the m100 for a less expensive datalogging setup. I've been using it in conjunction with an A'PEXi S-AFC for datalogging/street-tuning and have had no problems whatsoever with my VR-4. In fact, I may be helping a local 1G DSM tune his 16G setup in the near future.

Does the MMCD software not work on 2g DSMs? If not, I'd rather look for something that does. That was the program I was leaning to...

Sounds like SAFC-II would work on multiple systems. So I am leaning that way right now too.


I need to read about Megasquirt stuff. Is that pretty versatile too? I was reading some posts where people suggested it as a cheap and easy system to use, but I was a little confused if they were talking about AFC, logging, or both?

I haven't researched the others, but there is also HHH and MirageCorp for datalogging.

Alright, please correct me if any of this info is incorrect


1) All of A'pexi's AFCs should work on a 1g DSM, 2g, and a 3/s vehicle, and many more.

2) MMCD will work on 1g DSMs and 3/s cars that are pre OBD I? Basically all Mitsubishi cars pre OBD I.

3) You need something OBD II compatible for datalogging on an OBD II car.

Sounds good, but to be technically correct, OBD-I applies to '93 and under 3/S & '94 and under DSM aka "pre-OBD-II"

If memory serves me right, 94-95 3/S and 95-96 DSM incorporate the "hybrid ECU" where the MirageCorp and HHH [Hand Held Halo] software is supposed to work for datalogging.

I believe 1996 DSM would be OBD II. That was the year that all US vehicles had to be changed. And that's also what I was just reading on another post. 95 was the only hybrid year DSM...

You're definitely right about 96 and up. My reason for stating both 95 and 96 was because I thought those were the years that had EPROM ECUs, thus making them special.
