Ok so i just assembled my motor after rebuilding the head with new valves. Got them on ebay (i know big mistake)supposed to be stock. Used arp studs cometic gasket, put the belt on, went to turn it over and stopped. Timing is fine. Checked and checked again. Had the head decked. Was told it was cut 7 thousandth and the block was perfect when i straight edged it. Tolerence for cutting is 8 thousandths between the two correct? Im thinking these valves probably arent right or am i missing something stupid? Pulling everything apart tommorow. Also Is the gasket going to be ok after ive already torqued it down once?

hmm.. are the dowls on the cam gears facing down or up when you have the timing set at TDC... also if its a mls gasket you should be fine.. and i have torqued a graphite gasket loosened then re torqued before.. actually.. i did that yesterday :p cars runnin like a champ

did you change pistons?

what ebay valves did you get?

Yes i have manley rods and pistons. Valves came together with the 3g lifters and new guides. No name valves and they have a larger dish in the bottom compared to stock. Thought they might of looked a little different but didnt think anything of it. Dont know what else my problem could be. Gonna put the stock ones back in and hopefully it will fix my problem. Should i copper spray the gasket now that ive torqued it once or will i be fine?

who was the seller on ebay? engnbldr? if so you should have no issues with them.

now I wonder if you have the pistons in backwards.....

Pistons say front with arrow and are pointing towards timing cover.

Anyone have answer about the head gasket?

I still not think the valves are the issue...

were the HLAs bleed down before the install?

the head was cut .007 this time.. has it been cut before? new head thickness id 5.200 with a min of 5.185 (AERA spec)

are you running big cams?

as far as the gasket goes.. some say yes others no.. it depends on how it looks when it is off

Im running bc 280s. Everything is new. Just pulled off the head and it was number 2 and 4 exhausts that touched. Almost positive the head was never cut before.

How do i check the area?

Crank timing wheel on backwards

measure the tickness of the head, from the valve cover rail to the head gasket surface.. that will let you know excatly how much has been cut.

AERA stands for Automotive Engine Rebuilders Association

they gather specs on the heads, block crank rods and such.. you have to be a member to get the info

Do not spray anything on a head gasket unless you want a failure down the road, head gaskets HAVE to be able to move when they heat and cool, appling GLUE to them stops them from being able to move.
