ok so this isn't related to a dsm but i thought someone on this site could help with there knowledge. Its my mother in-laws car (anyone with an in-law knows how that goes). its a 2000 Malibu v6. she has a major vacuum leak at her throttle body at what seem to be the o-rings on that car. well when I spray starter fluid there the car kinda bogs down a little at first and if I continue to spray I hear a slight knocking noise. anybody have any ideas what could be the problem?

(I'm sorry if I wasn't supposed to post about anything other then a dsm but i read the rules and didn't see anything, I understand if this gets block)

Well, get a new o ring put in and stop spraying the fluid especially if you hear knocking sounds.

i plan on it I just didn't want to mask any kinda problem. I don't want to fix that and have something else go wrong that could have been prevented by a little bit of research.

The knock you are hearing is probably detonation. In-law work my favorite sometimes feel like :banghead:

I thought it sounded like that, but how would that be possible being that I'm basically introducing more gas with the starter fluid, I mean unless there is something I don't know about it.

and i feel you on the :banghead: she'll ask me to look at it then turn around and pay someone to fix it when i could do it for free.

oh yeah could the leak throw a egr flow insufficient code up. I think it could but wanted advice on it.

Starting fluid (ether) has a lower flash point than gasoline. Its possible that is what is causeing the egr code. I would just replace the o-ring clear the code and see what happens. May take care of it.

thats something I didnt know about ether thanks i'll check on the rings and get back
