well i bought a used fp big 28 off a kid on dsm trader.com. he claimed the turbo had only 11-15k on it, he wasnt really sure . anywho he insisted the turbo was rock solid, he said no shaft play/cracks. said the turbo never smooked or anything. so i bought it for $470 shipped. i get the turbo and all looks good. well guess i didnt look it over so good. cause i was showing it to a buddy one day and he was like theres oil in the exhaust wheel. i look and sure enough there is oil in there.

i decide to do a lil test and pour some oil in the oil return line and i stand it up turbine wheel side down. after drying the previous oil of course. im looking and no il comes out right away. so i let it sit like that for a day, turbine wheel side down. look at it a day later and sure enough, oil on the wheel. now theres no shaft play in and out. up and down theres a lil but i believe thats normal, its minimal play.

anywho, is this a bad turbo seal? this kid says im crazy and the turbo was solid and never smoked for him and blah blha blha. i was under the impression that maybe since in install it doesnt sit that way and when it heats up, the seal will expand, sealing better. am i right or u think this is a bad seal?

i do admit this kid was awesome as far a s shipping goes, got me a tracking number, sent it out when he got my money order and everything. im a lil sketched out here and i wanna know whats going on with my turbo. i have not installed this turbo yet but i do have an appointment to get it installed the end of the month, along with evo manifold, ported and 02 ported, 550's and a greddy 24r fmic. so im really bullshit and this kid says he doesnt know what I did to the turbo??????? wtf? i havent touched the thing. anyone have any info please help. thank you.

That doesn't mean the seal is bad. Oil will seep through a very small space if you leave it long enough. Your turbo on the car gets hot quickly and that keeps everything tight while oil is flowing through it and once the car is shut off oil pressure drops and the oil drains back to the pan. This leaves nothing sitting in the turbo to seep out, so the condition you made of oil sitting there for a day will never happen on your car.

If you want to know if it smokes or not, install it on your car and drive it around you will know right away. It's going to smoke as soon as you install it no matter what because you have had oil runing through it. It probablly had oil seep through to the exhaust wheel during shipping as well.

Honestly I would not worry about it just install it and see how it goes. If it smokes and seeps oil, then you have something to talk about.

You worry too much. I once had a guy try to tell me his turbo had a bad seal because he could blow air through the oil feed line and felt it slowly coming out the exhaust wheel. He installed it and worked perfect. Seals will expand considering the exhaust side of these turbos get up to 1600 deg. F ;)

werd, im sure the turbo is fine bro, we will bring it to frank at the end of the month and find out for sure, sarah said your 550's are on the way...thumb:

alright thanks alot guys. u know, one guy tells u its bad seals for sure then the next guy tells u its fine. i believe it should be fine. we'll sure as hell find out the end of february huh ? :D cant wait.

and yes jeff injectors are on the way and so is the fmic :D. thanks again guys, and if u have any more comments/input on this subject, feel free to post. anyone. :dsm:

I'm not sure if you know this or not... Forced Performance usually stamps or engraves FP on to the exhaust flange of there turbo's. If it doesn't have that FP stamp on it it's not a FP Big28. :)

That's cool, atleast you know that much. I think you should slap that sucker on there. I think FP makes great quality (durable) turbos IMO. I myself have been boosting 20psi daily on my FP ported Big28 for almost 2yrs. now and it's still kicking ass. :thumb:

thanks alot man. yea its going on end of this month along with an evo exhaust manifold, greddy fmic, 550's and im having the exhaust mani ported and 02 housing ported out. cant wait. u got any times o the fp big 28?

Last fall I ran a crappy 8.8 @ 83mph in the 1/8 mile at shadyside dragway here where I live in NC. That run was done on the stock 78,000 mile slipping clutch, and running 20psi on pump gas. As a matter of fact on that very same 8.8 run, I remember beating a SR20DET swapped 240sx that was fully modded. Also that was the first time I had ever run at the strip, so I'm hoping theres some room for me to improve next time out. :)

installed turbo. everything seemed fine except i had a couple intercooler leaks that i had to fix. ( we installed a greddy big fmic). so i kept moving/tightening couplers trying to pin point the leak and fix it. so after doing this a whole bunch of times i decided to pull the intake pipe to see if it wasnt fitting right onto the turbo. causing the whirrrring noise i was hearing. it sounded almost like a kazoo, u know the boost leak sound. i also found it wierd i didnt hear the normal turbo spool up sound but i figured it was because i had an ic leak that was overpowering the sound of the turbo spooling. anywho, i pull the intake pipe and i look...........i almost shit myself. the compressor wheel had chunks missing out of it. the thing fricking disintegrated. it was not like this before installation, obviously. im thinking there was too much shaft play causing the wheel to hit the compressor housing or the seal was shot causing the oil to escape and not lubricate the wheel properly. anyway, lesson learned i will never buy a used turbo or anything of the sort from anyone again unless i know/trust them.

so i think, yes, this kid sold me a shit turbo. do not buy from jeffrey bui, boostjunkie21. im buying a brand new fpbig28 ported turbo from forced performance and having it delivered 2nd day delivery. thanks for all of your responses.

on a better note, the evo3 exhaust manifold is installed, rc 550's, and greddy 24r fmic. im just so bummed that this urbo blew, hopefully i can get the new one installed by the weekend.
