Okay, im kinda embarassed about this... Well, i purchased a 14b off of a local guy here in town to put on my car so it wouldnt suck until I could get the cash for a 16g. In the meantime my car is driving on a t-25 since my t28 killer took a crap.

Anyhow, i checked the turbo for the regular, in and out play and side to side, make sure it spins freely, the exhaust housing doesn't even have not 1 crack! okayed it and paid the man.

Well.. I was porting the turbo this morning, so i just took the whole exhaust side off of the turbo. When i was done with my porting (not bad for my first time), i picked up the compressor housing and was just looking it over. I again spun it.. just fine...Then i wiggled it side to side again.. very slight play, no touching of th walls. Then I pushed it in and out with a little more force than before.. and sadly.. it appears to have a barely noticeable amount of shaft play in and out. I mean if i was to estimate. id say 0.5mm. The turbo seemed in such good condition i dont know how i passed that little amount of shaft play up, it must be because i have to give it a little more force than side to side to get the movement.

So what should i do? use it or lose it?

I would use it until you can get the cash to get 16G. If it comes down to it, the 14B will crap out, but all you need is for it to last long enough to get the 16G.
EDIT: Im sorry but Ive gotta add this in" Is it true...if you dont use it you lose it?" Anyone know what movie its from?

I would use it.I mean,it's not going to have zero in and out no matter what. There's little snap rings that stop it from moving, and they dont fit tight like you think they would. If you dont feel comfortable about it,you could rebuild it or sell it.My rebuild cost me $90.

All Turbos have a tiny amount of movement, especially when not filled with Oil. Stop being so Anal ;)
well, maybe your right but i didnt feel any on my t25 in and out. I just went out to my car and checked. But yeah, i know i'm anal about stuff like this...

You will be fine, my 14B has the standard side to side play(1mm or so), and it comes out about as much as you are saying and it worked fine for me I put 26k on it and it pulls hard, and to the best of my knowledge it is the original and has 190k miles on it. So with that being said I think yours will hold up fine for the school year or until you get enogh cash to get a 16G.

Dustin

ya your trippin... shaft play is nothing to worry about until it starts rubbing, and even then the turbo will still spool and boost fine

Same thing happend to me. T-25 blew, stuck a used 14b in for about 6 months before blowing it up on 22psi daily, now 2 weeks on the evo3. 14b's are fun ass little turbos. Go for it, connect 4.

My 14b was known to many dsm'rs around as one of the strongest original, stock 14b's they have ever seen....

And when I switched to the evoIII yesterday, I took off the 14b and saw a small crack in the exhaust housing.....So, the turbo doesnt have to be perfect to run strong...

BTW, I ran the turbo at 17psi daily, and 20-22 at the track...Turbo pulled hard...

2g's with 14b's are like 1g's with small 16g's....You'll have a real strong car, USE IT

i loved my 14b until i blew it and became james bondROFL . anyway, if its not broke dont fix it. as long as its running good, def. stick with it until you are ready to upgrade.

Put it on!

The 14b is the turbo that the 2Gs should have come with. I ran one for a loooong time, and really ran the hell out of it. It saw 24PSI at the track on race gas on multiple occasions. I ported it, and stuck a 34mm flapper in it when I added my 3" exhaust. Little did I know at the time that there are better ways to prevent creep. Eventually it cracked around the wastegate housing, and the exhaust housing because permeated with cracks, as all 14b's do, and started having trouble holding boost till redline. So, I replaced it with an E316G and was smart about porting for boost creep this time (Follow Oldman's advice! Decreasing radius ports before the wastegate passage are the way to go.). Even so, I really miss that 14b. The super fast spool, holding 20PSI to redline, just an awesome turbo on a lightly modded 2G. You might even like it more than your old 28.

Matt.

Thanks guys! Im pumped about putting this turbo on now. Just waiting on a SS oil feed line to get this sucker on. The 14b seems like a great option for me being in school, being as once i set up my car to accept a tdo5h replacements if something goes wrong is very cheap for my setup. Also, my t28 killer has a 16g compressor wheel on it and if my 14b does take a crap i'll probably port it out to 7cm and have it converted to an economical small 16g by a decent turbo company (the guy on vfaq who put up the turbo rebuild section did this). Anyways yeah, im pumped to be getting this t25 off of my car!

bring it up to the MD meet.. team-trinity.com check it out this saturday.
